It's freezing and I have to go to St Helens of all dives ( sorry martin )

Roll on summer

Bugger that - it was COLD here last night! Couldn't sleep as had left the patio doors open so the wind kept me in that half awake state all night and was freezing cold to boot - despite the additional blanket!

No worries Ardross. I can't wait to get out of it either.
It'll be warmer when you get there though, get the chemicals floating over from Widnes to create a more tropical climate.

Kitt Green 57 Gareth?

Think you can just about make it out:

Yesterday was surprisingly warm in Faringdon. The sun was out and the walk to school wasn't so bad. Today seems pretty much the same. Mustn't grumble.

You're absolutely right! And I know G-Mex well (though not from the air) so should have known better. Google Images gave me that picture as St Helens (the bastards!)

Probably they thought that as there wasn't a really pretty picture of St Helens they'd doctor that one. Here is the best I can do on the scenic St Helens:

Jump racing is better than flat racing.

Finishing work at 4pm is better than finishing work at 10pm.

Football is better than cricket.

It follows that winter is better than summer. So there.

That, presumably, is the 3-coach train going in to St Helens, while the 37-coach one leaving will appear in half an hour's time...

I assume it did have its glory days, though, just as the rejuvenated Manchester, Liverpool, and Sheffield had? Why hasn't it been able to pull itself out of its sad state?

That is an old pic of St. Helens, even I don't recognise that train and I've been on enough of them.

The centre is now pretty much all pedestrianised, the station area etc is being re-developed and the rugby ground is hopefully being knocked down in order to build housing and a new ground near the linkway (linking us with Warrington and Widnes).

Whilst it still needs a fair bit of improvement there are plenty worse towns in the North West.

It's still the number one manufacturer of glass and the chances are that the glass in your car windows came from St. Helens along with K glass (made by St. Helens firm Pilkington). We also have the Glass Museum which isn't too bad.

That is a old picture of Manchester too doesn't look much like that round the G Mex anymore.

Cheers, IS - so it's not that bad at all, then.
Among 440 branches and depots thatb we had St Helens branch shared the title for most break-ins and attempted break-ins.

Presume it's the one near the town centre and Parr that had a high crime rate. There's one out near the linkway too now which is a slightly nicer area.

I had a night out in St Helens a couple of years ago after having been at Haydock and can honestly say I didn't see one fight or bit of trouble. Its all a bit hazy though.
