I'm not a regular reader of fiction but working away from home means some boring nights in (alongside some wilder nights out :what: ) and I gave a chance to a trilogy by Phillip Pullman. My Mother-in-Law bought the first two in the series for me as a pressie simply because the review on the sleeve compares Pullman's talent to that of Tolkien. I'm a big fan of Lord of the Rings but after a chapter of 'Northern Lights' I wasn't convinced. Soon though, I was hooked. This is fantasy writing at it's best providing you still have a 'bit of the child in you'. I can't put them down now. As I mentioned, these books won't appeal to everyone but if you like a bit of fantasy (no, not that kind Gearoid!) get your cash out!

Northern Lights
The Subtle Knife
The Amber Spyglass

Mark wish I could find the time to read as well!! but being a one man band means I have to do it all cooking, shopping, cleaning, washing etc etc I can't afford a wench???? as well

The trilogy is called His Dark Materials, Mark and is very good. I didn't think it was a kids book at all though as it was marketed originally. The Subtle Knife is the best of the three.

The Subtle Knife is definitely the best of the three - those wheelie things in the Amber Spyglass really got on my wick

There's also Lara's Oxford, a (very) short story set after the end of The Amber Spyglass. Also includes a map and other strange bits and pieces which may mean something or may not.
