I'm not a regular reader of fiction but working away from home means some boring nights in (alongside some wilder nights out ) and I gave a chance to a trilogy by Phillip Pullman. My Mother-in-Law bought the first two in the series for me as a pressie simply because the review on the sleeve compares Pullman's talent to that of Tolkien. I'm a big fan of Lord of the Rings but after a chapter of 'Northern Lights' I wasn't convinced. Soon though, I was hooked. This is fantasy writing at it's best providing you still have a 'bit of the child in you'. I can't put them down now. As I mentioned, these books won't appeal to everyone but if you like a bit of fantasy (no, not that kind Gearoid!) get your cash out!
