The Brit Awards kicked off in spectacular style with a performance from Prince.

The pint-sized US superstar made his first appearance at the ceremony since 1997.

He rolled back the years with Eighties hits Let's Go Crazy and Purple Rain to an ecstatic reception from the audience.

The biggest night in the British music calendar took place at London's Earls Court Arena.

James Blunt won the prize for Best Pop Act, beating Will Young, Madonna, Katie Melua and Kelly Clarkson.

The former British Army captain was unknown a year ago but is now one of the nation's biggest music stars.

Picking up his award he said: "This means a hell of a lot to me. I really hadn't expected to be in a pop category at all but there are a lot of pretty girls in this one so I'm happy."

Kaiser Chiefs were crowned Best British Rock Act. The Leeds band went up to collect their award - only to be joined on stage by an unknown member of the audience keen to share their glory who was soon escorted off.

Front man Ricky Wilson said: "This is our first Brits. We weren't supposed to win this one. This means the world."

Guests at the awards, hosted by Chris Evans, included Madonna, Paris Hilton, Kelly Osbourne and Jamelia.

Sadly Gearoid a few mugs will go out and buy the winners just because they have won

Sales of singles aren`t a patch on what they were in the 60s/70s and 80s. That and the fact that unmitigated shite like Westlife can therefore run up several number 1s means anyone with a brain doesn`t pay attention to them anymore.

Kaiser Chiefs won best live act.
My mum loves them  She's seen them twice live and has tickets to see them again. She's very pleased they won that catagory.
