Periodically I've had reason to advertise on here on behalf of broadband providers other than Talk Talk :P Alright, they drive me up the wall and are right up there with the very worst for customer service imo. I couldn't therefore resist this article when I spotted it headlined on MSN homepage. I just had to click it and see the survey results

I was surprised to see Orange doing so badly, but then upon reflection I suppose I don't have to deal with any of their staff because I live with my very own technical support officer who tends to every computer related problem for me. I started off when it was run by Freeserve, then Wanadoo and now it's become Orange. The only time I've ever had to contact them was when I moved house (done that twice while I've been with them) and they were incredibly helpful and efficient.

My experience exactly (except for living with the technical support :dork: ).

I've used Tiscali for 2 years and never had a problem. Alwasy good service when you have to ring them up as well.

Until we recently moved home I was with Sky Broadband.

They now tell me that they have a glitch in their software that prevents them from connecting me at my new address.

I need some suggestions for a new ISP, the first person that mentions BT will get what he/she deserves.

There is no way that I will go to BT for anything again.

Above Warbs links to that survey and at the moment I am favouring Plusnet,...... does anyone have anything bad to say about that choice?

The other service that seems well thought of is BE but that isn't available in this backwater.

Is the "glitch" with Sky Broadband because you have changed your version of Windows Colin ?

I had this when changing to Vista as the (wireless) drivers they sent out on the installation disc only work with XP, so I had to connect to the internet via an ethernet cable and a very very very long phone extension cable to download new drivers, but having done that everything has been OK since.

BT.

Unless you are able/prepared to go for cable pretty much all of the others are dependent in some respect on BT to provide you your service. Why introduce the difficulty of dealing with more than one company?

For all the problems that people have with BT's customer services and setup (and many people don't have any) their actual service is very good. I doubt you would have any problems with reliability, which is not something that can be said for many 3rd party providers. Particularly those that are offering something that is too good to be true.

Remeber also that many "ISPs" are just resellers and they have to make the maths work some how. Are they really just pasing on economies or scale or is something somewhere being shaved?

Plus don't forget to add your BT line rental onto any package.

Unless you can bundle your package with something else (you mentioned your Sky problems unfortunately), how about mobile phone? Utilities? then my recommendation would always be BT.

Sorry.

Bets, you must have missed my rant about BT, there was a thread devoted to it.

36 days to provide me with a landline!!!!!

I would go without the internet rather than use BT; and as for you recommending them for anything, defies my belief.

Merls, no cable up in the hills, I'm afraid, I can get Virgin on 'no-cable' as they call it and it is under consideration.

DG, no the glitch isn't just with my system, they admit that my end is alright (ooooer missus), it is a problem with their software, they have had a team of programmers working on it for weeks and it could be months before they sort it out.

Don't use Orange. You will lose emails. I had their free service for nearly a year but couldn't afford their unreliability so I have gone back to a paid service with Zen which is superb. If you are not sure about Orange, take a look at orange problems
Some of the posts are mine

No I saw it.

And I recognise that people have problems with them. Indeed I had similar problems myself which I tried to tip you off about in one of the threads.

And on the basis of my points above - particularly the fact that without cable you are dependent on them for certain (the key) actions anyway. I still would recommend them.

Noses, faces, cuts and spite to avoid them I am afraid. It is easy to be principled or even emotional but is it worth it in the long run if you end up with poorer service or a higher price and then potentially the pain of having to move again (and probably dealing with BT to resolve the necessary changeover actions anyway)?

I'm with Betsmate, having had experience within the organisation, BT might well stuff up sometimes, and in your case in a big way Colin, but they have thousands of happy customers, probably more than any other provider, as Betsmate also points out they provide the broadband for many customers through resellers. BT for me.

Jamie, as I said above, BE isn't available in this area.

I have gone for IDnet.

So far I am impressed, after speaking to them yesterday morning the router arrived first thing.

There is no activation fee and the first month is free (both on special offer) and there is a rolling contract of one month.

...............and provided BT don't have me on a blacklist (me, paranoid!!!) I should be connected by this time nexr week.

Things can only get worse!!! (that glass is definitely half-empty)
