What exactly would I need with a wireless router?

I have a laptop which has wireless capability (though I have connected wirelessly) stuck to a modem at the moment. Presumably I will need some class of wireless card for the new desktop computer also?

Does the wirelss router just connect into the existing modem or does some pissing about need to be done?
