Hi

I'm planning to build a racing website - but am a bit of an amateur so would appreciate any help and advice from someone who knows what they are doing!

It's basically going to be a testimonial to those horses who have lost their lives either on or off the course, I think it's important to acknowledge them and many people want to know what has happened to their old favourites.

I don't want to use fast hosts as I had terminal problems with their sitebuilder tool when I tried to build a web page last year, it all ended up coming to nothing and I paid out quite a lot of money for this!

I don't have any design software though (like dreamweaver etc) so would prefer a site that could build, register domain name and host.

So any other advice or recommendations gratefully accepted!

Thank you

I used to have a website with Freewebs but I had problems with their site so I changed to Bravenet.com which so far has been successful...free and also comes with a website builder wizard which works well. It seems to give me more bandwidth than Freewebs did and I've put quite a lot of stuff on without having to charge.

Then again I'm not the most technical of people so maybe others on here would know more about it!

These two might be worth playing around with, a 14 days free trial on Moonfruit will help concentrate the mind and experiment on exactly how you want to lay your site out

Purr, let's see if Trig or Ted from FF spots your plea. They're very knowledgeable and also very helpful. It's certainly a nice idea, since only the outstanding horses get their own webs, alive or deceased. You can sign me up as a member when you've got going!

Hiya Purr
Why not apply to your isp for free webspace, most providers give approx 30mb for free and often supply a sitebuilding tool.
When you get this free webspace, you will be given an internet address to upload your files to. This is often a long address and a useful site to use is .CO.NR this is a site name free redirect.
If for instance the address your isp gives you is www.yourprovider.co.uk/purr/homepage/you can apply for the address www.purr.co.nr much easier to remember and then when ever anyone types the address www.purr.co.uk into the address bar this will redirect it to your site www.yourprovider.co.uk/purr/homepage.
(The object of doing this is to save you registering a domain name)

If you decide you want your own domain name then it's approx £10 for a .co.uk address for 2 years.
If you want a larger amount of webspace then a site I use is very good - you can find it here web-mania
To transfer files to this though would mean using an FTP (file transfer protocol) but thats not too difficult.

There are lot's of tips I could give you but one major one is to always resize any pictures you put onto the internet as they use a lot of space and bandwidth.

Hope some of the above helps but if you have any other questions then just ask.

Thanks guys for your help and advice.

I'm so useless and brain dead (especially in the evenings!) that I felt the need for a point and click type of exercise! So as I don't have a design programme or FTP, I have had a play with Moonfruit.

Wow! I am really impressed. They're expensive compared to other sites as you don't get as much bandwidth or space, but I really like the professional style of the pages I have created so far so I expect I will stick with it.

Now just for the task of getting photographs supplied... I am intending to scavenge around everywhere as politely as I can and see what I can get cheaply, as £50 per image to use pro photos is just too much for a non-business website.

I'll post a link as soon as it looks half way ready.

Thanks again!

Best of Luck with this Purr - it sounds a great idea. Once it is up and running, I am sure a few racing forums would allow you to place a link to their sites.
