Burning Cds

Today, I thought I'd done a first.

I have a boxed collection of cds but wanted to select the best to play on the cassette in the car.

I manged to 'rip' the songs I wanted on to my PC and then 'burn' them on to a CD. Then I'd copy the CD to cassette using the household sound system. I was then going to use the new CD at home and the cassette in the car.

However, despite selecting the option to create a CD that can be used with any compatible technology, it doesn't play on my CD player. (It does on the PC.)

Any ideas on how to surmount this problem?

What format are you ripping them into?

They will need to be .WAV format to play on your home CD System.

Either rip them in this format initially (far preferential) or download a piece of software to convert them from whatever format you have ripped them in to WAV (freeware is available to do this).

Then the chances are that they are encoded in WMP's proprietary format (WMA) or at least MP3 format.

Find the files that you created, right click on them, select properties and it will tell you their format.

If they are not WAV files then you will need to do them again or convert them. Bear in mind that WAV is a lossless format so the files will be pretty big - perhaps 50Mb each. so unless you have a load of space, only do the ones that you want to end up on your cassette!

Thanks, BM. Thanks, too, to PW for his PM.

Unfortunately, the problem isn't resolved. The files are now in WAV format but still won't play on the household CD player. shrug::

CD-R tend to work better.

Also when you create the CD, make sure that you create an Audio CD and not a data CD. I am sure you can do this just in XP, but it is a long time since I have done one.

Thanks. I nabbed our IT man this morning and he tried it with CD-R, saying the same as you. It's worked with the CD player at work :D

I look forward to trying it on the CD player at home!

Mr Technician also said some cars' CD players/changers don't like CD-RWs.

Success. The CD plays on the home system.

Looks like I'll have to start buying CD-Rs if I want to do more of my own compilations. At least they're cheap.
