Me and my fiance were horrified at the cost of wedding photographers, so we have decided to buy a good camera instead and ask a friend (who enjoys hobby photography) to take some shots for us, thereby getting some nice pics and a good camera to keep afterwards.

Looking to spend in the region of £350-400, perhaps a bit more for the right thing. Would need decent memory cards, batteries and tripod-thingy as well (can you see what an expert I am!)

Has anyone any tips or recommendations - particular makes/models or the sort of features to look out for?

Thank you muchly :)

I've got a Nikon D40 for sale

Did you want a digital compact or a DSLR? don't know how much you know about camera's but a compact has no removable lenses, a DSLR you can buy different lenses for, I can't speak for other makes as I have only had Nikons but I have got on really well with them, I bought my D40 last december which is aimed at DSLR newbies like I was, I recently bought a D80 which is the next one up, you can buy a D40 with a 18-55mm lenses for about £400 now, I bought an extra lense which is 55-200mm & that catered for pretty much everything, I bought the D80 as I wanted to have more buttons to play with :P

Ooh how much are you selling it for Helen?!

I've had point and click Nikons in the past and always got on well with them. I think a "beginners" DSLR would be ideal actually, I like the idea of being able to use different lenses for different things in the future, but wouldn't want anything too complicated as I don't want my sister's boyfriend (our photographer to be!) to get confused and mess it all up :D

Will need to think on the price (in other words I haven't got a bloody clue!)

I could bundle up a few bits to get you started
Camera
18-55mm lense
55-200mm lense & carry case (Nikon £179)
UV filter x1 thats just a piece of glass that you screw on to the end of the lense which means if you knock it you break a £15 bit of glass instead of a £180 lense!
Budget tripod
battery/chargers & all the bits that came with it!
its got a warranty that ends in December (currys)
2GB SD card (used on jpeg fine 256 photo's) brand new & unused

I don't actually think you would need to buy anything else!

Will pm you on price this evening, will have a think over dinner

My best advice would be that instead of asking us I think you should ask your hobby-photographer friend what camera he would like to use. Its the friend that has to take the pictures and has to use something with which he is happy or disaster could be the result.
