I'm having mobile phone hassles at the moment - well, maybe not hassles, per-se, but I want to upgrade my phone now while I'm in the country & my contract doesn't run out until August 28th. That's not really a problem, but I would like to upgrade now. What I really want to know though is has anybody had experience of Vodafone's "Passport" scheme whereby when you are abroad you pay a 75p initial connection fee for the call, and then your tariff charges for the rest of the call? Their website also claims that you can utilise your free minute allowance abroad, which I currently can't do. Now, does this scheme actually do what it says on the tin or are there catches, does anyone know? Ie, is there a maximum call-minute quota per month or something? It's just that this deal would be worth it's weight in gold to me & save me an absolute fortune - I just reckon there has to be a catch somewhere!

So far, I have rung Orange (who I am currently with) & pulled the old "I want to terminate my contract" line on them. They have been good so far, suggesting I leave it a few days until I'm in the final month of my contract, telephoning their disconnection team & he reckons they will at least chuck in a free phone. On my current tariff, it would cost me #189.99 for an upgrade to the phone I want as I'm only on a #15 a month tariff. There is no point in me going onto a higher tariff, as they only give me free minutes that I am unable to use. Like I said to the guy though, I'm not a #15 a month punter - I haven't paid a bill of less than #50 in over 3 years now, & I often pay double that at least, monthly.

So, basically, I'd be interested to hear whether this Vodafone scheme is any good, otherwise I'd quite like to stay with Orange as although the network coverage isn't the greatest, I've always found them far & away the best in terms of service and ease of use, ie getting hold of them quickly (rather than sitting in half hr queues on the phone) & have always found them exceptionally efficient. I also can't be done with the hassle of terminating a contract, moving a contract, & I want to keep my old number that I've had for 9/10 yrs now. Being out of the country most of the time, the least hassle-free option is the one I want!

Any input would be gratefully received, cheers in advance! B)

I've been with Orange for years. I'm perfectly happy with them. They claim that if you prefer another network's tariff rather than one of theirs they will put you on it, so if you like the look of the Vodafone deal then tell Orange that it's the one that you want.

Ah, cheers Brian, I'll try that one out on them - I didn't realise that, & if I could wangle that it'd save me serious cash! So far, they've been very accomodating, telling me I've got a good chance of getting almost what I want if I wait until I'm in the final month (4 days) & then go direct to the disconnection team.

Kinell!

I had a quarterly bill with £20 of charges land on the doorstep the other week and immediately reached for the phone lock. :what:
