My daughter decided to give me another few grey hairs when announcing she was going backpacking in Cambodia & Vietnam next week for six weeks with a friend.

Anyone knowledgeable about these two countries, could do with some experiential things/places not to do as well as places to visit.

I saw a few backpackers in Cambodia, including some females on their own in the capital. I don't think you have anything to worry about in that country.

A very common place for Australians to journey to throughout the year, and quite a safe area to venture to. Where is she going too in Vietnam and Cambodia?

One of my good friends who is 20 went last year for 2 weeks. She went on her own and went tripod biking through the vast jungles no guide or anything. Angkor Wat is one amazing city, and at its time the world's most populated city, and the capital Phenom Penh is said to be quite dynamic.

My brother goes to both countries, and Laos three times a year for business, and then ends up staying for a few weeks on. He reckons its the best 3 countries he has ever been too in Asia. Noting he has been to Japan, China, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and a few others in the region.

Monty - how do you think my parents felt when I said in 2008 "I am going to Mongolia and South Korea for 4 weeks on my own and venturing into the wilderness?" I was only 24 at the time. At the time it was a huge deal, now if I said anything out of the ordinary, my dad just smiles and nods. I have been solo travelling now since 2008, and find it an easier and more enjoyable way of getting around. Hell I have met more people this way, and have had better experiences going on my own. You can do your own thing, and if the experience of the trip doesn't work out, then its only you to blame for, not the other person.

The more adventurous, the far superior the trip, IMO. Just got back from spending a week in a remote part of Western Samoa.

tripod biking

Apologies if I'm being horrendously stupid here, but how exactly does a tripod bike work? Does the tripod not get in the way of the wheels making contact with the ground? Is the tripod on top, with intrepid cyclist using leg extensions to reach the pedals? Or is just some Aussie way of saying tricycle which I've never come across before?

I know nothing about Cambodia save what I saw in The Killing Fields.

PS Has anyone seen my shoes?

Have seen one or two of those around here, and thought they looked quite odd! A bit like a mobile sun lounger - I don't know how you manage hills in that position.

MR2 - be grateful your daughter's not going to Australia, where we all know that abducting wandering Brits and feeding them to crazed outback cannibals is the most likely outcome.

These are the places, Sarah and her friends plan to visit. If any one has any tips about places to visit in and around this list pray tell and I will forward them.

I went for 2 weeks last March when my girlfriend was travelling, it's an absolutely amazing part of the world and you have nothing to worry about. She'll be safer there than in parts of London anyway!

I think the best book is Rough Guide's South-East Asia on a Budget myself, had some excellent places in there.

I'd recommend the usual really:

Hanoi

Halong Bay (Book a boat trip in Hanoi, most respectable guesthouses offer decent quality trips)

Ninh Binh (A lot of people seem to skip by but it's stunning, an absolute must see, we hired bikes and then cycled to the bit where you get to go on boats through the Karst landscape, picture attached but excuse the poor quality, it's a link from my Facebook; http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v2697/14/95/61102428/n61102428_39581726_6968476.jpg)

Hoi An (Get some new clothes made, get her to take your measurements and get some nice shirts/suits made. Tell her to take pictures of items she wants making though or they generally don't do a good job. I got a quality jacket made there from a picture in GQ and I still wear it regularly)

Angkor Wat is simply one of the most breathtaking places you could visit, tell her to take her time there and I'd allow 4-5 days there personally.

Phnom Penh is an absolute hole but you simply have to visit the Killing Fields and the Genocide Museum. Move on afterwards.
