I'm looking to get a new camera soonish (alot sooner than OH thinks anyway!) I have had a couple of digital compacts but now want a "Proper" camera ;)

I've been looking at a couple of digital SLR's, now before you think I know what I'm talking about I' Don't! the one that seems geared towards the crossover from compacts to SLR's is the Nikon D50 & I don't really want to pay anymore than about £400ish, my compact is fine for snapshots & comes out lovely & clear but the zoom is terrible as you can see from the Great Leighs photo's, I'd also like to take some more action shots with the dogs etc & my compact just doesn't handle those very well due to the slow shutter speed (what I've been told anyway)

Anyone offer any advice?

It all depends what sort of pics you want to take and what lenses you need. I use the Fuji S3Pro as advertised above. I also have a Nikon, but wouldn't recommended it to anyone!

I have a choice of lenses as each does a different job. I have a Nikkon 1.8 85mm and a Nikkon 70- 105 for close ups and a Sigma 70-200 for zoom, not to be confused with the crappy Nikon zoom. I have a few other lenses but those are the main ones I use for horse racing. Aldaniti it's best to go to a local camera dealer if you have one. Tell them how much you want to spend. Don't forget that memory cards and batteries can add up to a fair amount, so don't forget to add them into your total.

Thanks Tracey

The D50 is interesting as it uses the same mem card as my compact (SD) which would save me a few quid as I already have two & the battery comes with it, so does a basic lense, I've been told tonight that the D50 has just been replaced by the D40 at the same price,

I'm looking to take mostly action/portrait photo's of the pets etc if that helps!

Cheers, I've just been reading about the D40 & it says that it needs lenses with a built in motor  whatever that means  are these more expensive that ordinary lenses? I don't have any equipment at all so its not like I need it to fit this new camera but what I don't want to happen is I buy the D40 & I have to pay a fortune for the lenses

Have just picked up my new toy today :P a Nikon D40 with the 18-55mm lense & a 70-200mm lense all for £449 as someone gave me a discount voucher that they were not going to use :) it should do me until I decide to step into the "scary Money" camera's  if I don't get on with it then I have a nice point & shoot camera :o

One small tip, if you are seeing ok through the viewfinder but the LCD screen says its too dark & won't let you take a picture.................. take the lense cap off  took me 10mins to realise that

That reminds me of quite a funny third eye on Soccer AM where a Man Utd fan is trying to take a photo but looks totally bemused as she can't do it for exactly that same reason (her lense cap is still on).

You should have a lot of fun with the camera, maybe some more shots of Great Leighs if it ever opens!

Now there's a thought, i could go back up there over christmas with my big lense & get a better shot of the building :)
