There were some decent performances at Carlisle today - Iron Bridge and Harpers Brook in the 1:25; Good Risk at All in the 3:05 - but I’d tuned in mainly for the Listed feature race and in particular how Bear Ghylls would get on after his eighteen month lay off.

There were some decent horses in the field, including a couple of Pattern winners, but I thought BG had the beating of them on his hurdle form. It wasn’t really a bet, though, because of the lay-off and how he would take to fences.

As it turned out he looked the part, racing prominently and jumping well aside from an early error and a slow last when he was tired, after which he faded to finish a 10 length third. Hope he’s come out of it ok because I think the winning post beckons.

In front of BG the chasing debutante Beauport held off the much more experienced Millers Bank a Grade 1 winner. I’d actually fancied him last week at Aintree when he unshipped Kieran Woods at the first fence and I supported him in a small way today. As far as the winner is concerned I think it was a strong performance and I don’t think it’s the last time he’ll see the winner’s enclosure.
