I seek enlightenment - what the devil is this all about? What is required of the car - does it have to be converted - do you need to carry a big LPG canister in a trailer behind you - is it actually cheaper or does the increased burn rate make it about the same?

Does it have to be converted?

Yes, though you can have it done so that the vehicle can be switched between LPG and petrol.

Do you need to carry a big LPG canister in a trailer behind you?

No, you will have a cylinder or tank fitted at the time of conversion.

Is it actually cheaper or does the increased burn rate make it about the same?

It is very definitely cheaper, as the petrol and diesel tax rates do not apply to LPG. I once had an investigation done as to whether we should convert a large fleet ofd delivery vans to LPG. The reason that we didn't was that at the time there were not enough widespread filling stations. It is also muich less harmful to the environment.

This piece is old now but it gives you an idea:

LPG Power

My father had his car converted, as you describe, that he could switch between the two. The cylinder did take a big lump out of the boot space. That was thirty or so years ago, so maybe it can be done more discreetly now.

Thank you Brian, most informative as always! :D

The reason for asking is because I have noticed that BT appear to have altered their fleet.
