Both the Americans and the French have been up in arms for years that he has ben allowed to continue to subvert and recruit vulnerable young men to jihad. There is very little doubt that the security services and Special Branch allowed him to carry on as they had sources within his team who were reporting on all that was happening. It appears that at a later stage he himself, having been an unwitting supplier of information, did a few deals with the spooks.

It's a murky old business, this intelligence game.
