A massive gamble from Byrnes trained/Davy Russell ridden Mask Of Darkness failed in the first at Chepstow. This fella was backed in from fancy prices to 9/4 at the off. Well beaten into 3rd- he clearly didn't see out the 3 miles on the heavy ground. Not too often this stable leave the money behind when it's down.

Russell won again on Merchant Paddy at Leop and he didn't need to beat the living daylights out of him either.

The Solwhit Fairyhouse incident should have got him thrown out of the game trackside and probably a little bit extra as well.
They didn't throw him out for the Laetitia incident mentioned above and that was about the most blatant example of race fixing ever - if it'd been McCoy vs. Walsh in that finish he'd have gone. Byrnes did what most trainers will do with the plot and cover it up with jockey bookings.

Ie. "he ran better today as we had a more experience jockey", "we felt a stronger jockey would help" and "the jockey rode a poor race and the horse was knackered at the finish".

Interesting to see if anything comes to light this week re Byrnes, as I believe he may have some cases to answer.

Same here Gal. The winner was under pressure from 4f out and despite a couple of air shots the jockey took a pull about 20 yards out on the runner-up. Shocking.
