Cheltenham Racecourse Redevelopment

An interesting presentation today, and the plans certainly look to fulfil a brief of "keeping the horse at the centre of everything we do". The customer experience will certainly be enhanced, in terms of paddock views as much as anything, unless you happen to be an A&R boxholder!

Any timescale on how long it would be expected to take? Will the intention be to complete it between April and October, or will some of their fixtures need a temporary home?

No fixtures to move. Start date of April 2014, with works projected to take 22 months, in time for 2016 Festival. The 2015 event would see some disruption, therefore, but no specific plans to limit crowds (I'd imagine some reduction in numbers would be necessary).

The one change I would have liked is to see, although not part of the redevelopment area as such, is to make the Members' Lawn a hard standing area. For most of the Winter it has been out of bounds owing to seriously wet ground underfoot and apparently became a mudbath durig the Festival. Seem to remember a tweet by Rory that the directors aren't keen though

To a lesser degree I suppose the same could apply to the winners' enclosure.

What's your view Rory ?

Annual members seem to be planned to move to the new stand - so no views of the winning post for us any more .

I did have a chat with Rebecca Davies afterwards about the possibility of using astroturf (all the rage in gardening circles at the moment, apparently) along with/instead of grass in some areas. There is a section of the parade ring which already uses the surface, and while you wouldn't want the paddock dug up, it may make sense to use it on the lawn. It's been done some serious damage this year, and will need repair in the summer, for sure.
