As usual the racing was top rank, but the absolute highlights came at the start and the finish.

Tuesday will live long in the memory. Firstly, it was tremendous to see Constitution Hill slaughter the Champion Hurdle field without even breaking sweat. I remain convinced he is the best jumps horse of my lifetime and I think he stands at the door of greatness. It’s a bit odd that I viewed his performance with a sense of relief more than anything because he did exactly what I was hoping for and there were those three tickets, of course.

Then along came Honeysuckle and it was such a pleasure to see her go out on such a high. She’s done me well over the years and did so again as a farewell gift. Happy retirement m’lady.

And the finish today, well who else but Galopin Des Champs winning the Gold Cup so convincingly under a cool ride from Paul Townend. He’s only seven and he might dominate this for years. Here’s hoping.

Winners: Constitution Hill, Honeysuckle, Gaillard de Mensil, Stage Star, Galopin des Champs.

Losers: Facile Vega, High Definition, Jonbon, Gaelic Warrior, Gerri Colombe, Queens Gamble, Mighty Potter, Shiskin, Luccia

On sp that amounted to +2.5 points, but I was well in hand because of the CH tickets. So a decent Cheltenham all in all.

Now then, what have I got for Kempton tomorrow?
