Garda charged after attacking jelly bean machine
By Cormac O’Keeffe
A LONG-SERVING garda is to faces charges after he attacked a jelly bean machine in a kebab shop.
The garda inspector became extremely agitated when he could not get any sweets from the dispenser after putting in money.
The Dublin-based garda, aged in his 50s, was with his wife and brother-in-law at the time.
They had entered the Abrakebabra take-away in Templemore, Co Tipperary, just before 2am last Saturday.
The trio had been out socialising in the town, which is also the location of the Garda Training College.
He is understood to have put a €2 coin into the machine for the jelly beans, but none came out.
The machine accepted different coins and did not return his money or any sweets.
It’s believed the man became angry and roared at the staff to get his money back.
Abrakebabra management asked him to calm down, at which stage the garda violently shook the machine.
The man became extremely upset and staff at the outlet became concerned.
When he still refused to calm down, management rang the local gardaí.
A number of gardaí arrived and the inspector was asked to calm down again. When he refused to do so, he was arrested for public order offences.
His wife and brother-in-law were also subsequently arrested.
They were all detained at Templemore Garda Station and questioned.
The garda was later charged and released on station bail to appear in Templemore District Court in September.
He faces charges for three public order offences, including being drunk and disorderly.
A garda spokesperson yesterday said: “We are investigating an incident involving a member of An Garda Síochána in Templemore on July 16.”
