Codename Rose

I'm not sure that we (as in the British government of any era) have done anything special for our ex-SOEs, especially as they had such a relatively short time in service - they were churned out with little training and often poorly-equipped, and not expected to last more than a few weeks before discovery and execution or some other horrible fate. Apart from bunging medals at them (live or posthumously), I don't think we've done much to honour them at all. The Service used young women particularly, preferably well-schooled girls with language skills such as 'Rose'.

What a very vivid war she had - perhaps all a bit too much adrenalin, and that's why she closed herself off from society later on.

That's sounding a lot more positive. Babbacombe's a lovely part of Torquay - rather smart. (Well, it was when I lived in Torquay back in the 60s!) Shame that her story never got fully known. No doubt they were times of high anxiety, but she seems to have thought on her feet and saved her own life. Intelligent, resourceful, patriotic and pretty attractive, too. She'd have been a very interesting person to have known.
