I want to buy myself a coffee machine, cheap and cheerful to start with I think. I like freshly ground coffee that I get out and cannot replicate with the instant stuff at home. Any suggestions as to where to go or what to get?

(All advice except Slims and Onthebridles is most welcome)

Brother got mother one at Xmas. You'll pick up a cheap one in Argos.

Never drunk coffee so can't advise on taste

What kind of cups of coffee do you like? (espresso, latte, etc)

Took a look at Argos there, seems like the ones that use coffee beans are pretty expensive, over €400!!

Del, to get a very good natural machine, you probably need to spend 800 +.

Your options are:
Cafetiere, if you like longer coffees http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb...rds=coffee+cafetiere&sprefix=coffee+c,aps,220
Espresso maker for hob http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bialetti-Mo...8&qid=1388516027&sr=8-2&keywords=coffee+maker
Nespresso machine http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb...+,aps,196&rh=i:aps,k:coffee+nespresso+machine - some friends really like this, I won't get one as I don't want coffee from a plastic thing and Nestle hardly the most ethical company.. But I will say it doesn't taste bad.

Thanks Hamm

We got a Nespresso machine a few weeks back, and it is sound.

OK, ordering up the capsules is a pain in the arse, but it's less effort than actually getting-up and making her one.

CAnt fault my Nespresso - lots of models to choose from but would suggest buying one with a built in aereator to froth the milk.

Put a thread up here a couple of years ago. Bean to cup machine we bought and have enjoyed it every day. Cost over £200 De Longhi machine. We buy beans from coffee bean shop online, roasted same day. Fantastic

My concern with these machines is that they might be like razors and razor blades. It is the on-going cost of the coffee that can be expensive. . BTW I am a tight arse.

That's why we have t got one (yet) Tout - it's not so much the machine costs, it's the pods to carry on that soon bump it up. Would love one though!!

We had a tassimo machine for a couple of years prior to the delonghi, yes coffee was lovely until they binned the coffee I liked & replaced the pod with something yuck, at least with a machine that uses beans/ground coffee you can stick with what you like & its a whole lot cheap too!

You've come a long way for a boney arsed bogman. What's wrong with a cup of strong tae from a jam jar?

I'm not a coffee drinker but took a quick decko at the Which? recommendations.

They have a total of 48 recommendations across the range of machine (capsule, bean to cup, etc). The ones with the highest ratings in the capsule and ground sections (didn't look any further) aren't anywhere near as expensive as the ;prices mentioned on this thread. Around £155 max.

Still wouldn't tempt me. I could buy a couple of years' supply of quality tea for that kind of money.

I've got a nespresso (office), del longhi (kitchen) and dolce gusto (yard)...the bells and whistles one in the kitchen is wonderful but honestly I use the nespresso most!
