Broadcaster Colm Murray's death was announced today.
Sportsreporter for RTE News, his main interest was horse racing and he did the sport a huge service in his life, bringing the atmosphere and excitement of racing and especially the major racing festivals into Irish living rooms.
A peoples' person, raconteur and mimic of note he had the gift of communication with professional and casual observer alike, making his message simple but interesting.
He was diagnosed with motor neuron disease in 2010, retired from broadcasting for a while but under WP Mullins instructions went back to work .
His style was never better seen than in 2011 RTE Cheltenham coverage when he told story after story, one wittier than the next between races to the point that the viewer wanted the race to finish to hear the next yarn!
An interview first broadcast on radio 01/01/2012 is being repeated tonight on RTE Radio 1 at 10pm. I urge all to listen to this gifted man with the beatiful voice once more.
Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis. R.I.P

Very well written edgt - when Colm was doing the Saturday night news it wasn't unusual to see the closing stages of 3 races.A massive loss to Irish racing and a tragic loss for his family.

A great broadcaster in every way, a joy to watch and a gentleman by all accounts. And the way he handled his disease was incredible beyond words. RIP.

First of all i am not familiar with him but that is the most terrible disease and that in itself is so very sad

I am unfamiliar with Colm Murray. But I initially misread the thread title as Colin Murray RIP. Which filled me with joy.

I know I know. At least hes been banished to talksport but i will still be scouring the obituaries every day in the hope that the smug weasel faced cnt has fallen in a vat of acid or something

MND is a dreadful disease which killed my father very quickly aged just 60.

Colm Murray not that well known on this side of the Irish Sea but he sounds like a gentleman and a superb broadcaster.

Condolences to his friends and family.
