It's no secret now that I recently stood for election to the Welsh Asembley as a quasi communist candidate, (and will doubtless be asked to do similar come the next general). As part and parcel of this package you obviously have to give your name and address etc and ever since I've recieved the odd piece of literature, you take that on the chin, some of it's abusive, some of it's supportive, but to date most of it's been alleged academic research.
Today I received this one from Gravesend; it's typed out and I try and reproduce it as faithfully as I can, the enevlope address, the Dear etc and signature is handwritten though:
'ASSESSMENT'
Juvenile misconduct.
Over the past few years, we've heard a very great deal about young
people mucking around. Doing this, doing that. How it has to be stopped. And so on.
Let's say that we do have this excessive misbehaviour.
Working-class estates. For by far the most, that is 'where'
And. By whom? Once consideration, very likely. They are young people who will
not be attending university.
Yet. Amidst it all. Do we not have an awkwardness?
Of the use of, indeed, illegal substances, in whatever sense, of the effect of, as to
what is to be done, what is to be made?
Let's say that we were to allow.
To the extent that something is awry, as to contemporary society, that this or that
is wrong, that the underlying factor in it all would be 'illegal substances' and, that
being so, it is a question of their being driven out.
Higher Education.
No doubt, it does confer advatages. Give benefits. Worth pursuing.
However.
In that regard?
yours sincerely
Barrie Buxton
and then my name is inked in again at the foot
Strange? I've had abuse and threats before now, but this one has caused me a little bit more puzzlement than most? I was particularly curious by his reference to "what is to be done" which as any half decent communist scholar will tell you was the title of a seminal work by Lenin circa 1902. But then I decided this was just coincidence. It's hardly threatening, but possibly disturbed? I don't know. The gentleman has provided me with an address which I doubt will have any authenticity, but no phone number. The handwriting looks infirm, and of someone of age if I were guessing, and is purporting to represent a group I've never heard of previously called SHED.
Oh and his slogan appears to be
"WE GO FORWARD, BY GOING BACK"
Possibly a reference to 1902  but also another possible reference to piece Lenin wrote in a letter to Rosa Luxemburg called one step forward two steps back?
