My absence on the board in the past few weeks is because I was away and then when I returned my PC wasn't working.

I took it in and it apparently needed a new motherboard.... Fair enough I thought!

6 long days later and it's been fixed but cost me £117....the part he fitted is £25 on some websites and there is no breakdown of costs on the invoice.

In addition to this, the PC is running slower than before, some programs aren't working and half the music stored on it has been moved to different files and one of my hard drives moved from C: to E: so iTunes is completely screwed.

Should I kick up hell with them?!

A local computer shop, it isn't part of a chain.

This is the piece of crap they've put in it...Asus K8U-X

It is much much much slower than before, it's just took about 15-20 minutes to upload 160 photos!

You were absent?

:what:

Who are you and what is it that you want?

I wanted people with knowledge of computer maintenance to inform me whether I have paid over the top for the work completed on my PC.

I'm Dave, nice to meet you.

Hi Dave, I'm Phil.

I run the forum.

There will be plenty of people along soon to help you out, mate.

When you say upload Dave, do you mean to the web? If so, it's unlikely to be down to the motherboard. If the motherboard only cost £25 then £92 sounds excessive for fitting it but, you're usually looking at a min charge of £50 taking anything into these places. The fact files and drive letters have changed suggest he maybe had a bit of hassle getting it working so, I don't know, maybe it wasn't straightforward. If everything is working slowly you should maybe take it back and tell him that.

No Tom, I mean upload photos from my camera onto my PC.

I've spoke to a couple of people this evening and they think I should give them a call and ask to speak to the manager.

It did take the guy 6 days to do and he looked like he should be manufacturing pork scratchings rather than repair PCs to be honest!

If it is running slower than before, and it is the same make and model of motherboard, unless something hasn't been fitted correctly, the most likely cause is that the BIOS has been set to default rather than optimised performance level. If you are not familiar with entering the BIOS (usually pressing Dell at the POST screen) leave well alone and return back to the shop. It is simple enough though and there is probably a choice in the BIOS to either load "failsafe defaults" or load "optimised settings" or very similiar. The shop will almost certainly have not altered BIOS settings from the default so of you are feeling brave have a look through the manual and tweak a couple of the settings. They may also have connected your drives back in a different order which would explain some of the files being on drive C, but without closer examination it would be impossible to say.

Do you have more than one hard drive on the PC or do you have one drive partioned?

I have 2 hard drives Kathy, my music is now all over the place and will take weeks to reorganise!

I showed my brother the motherboard they fitted and he described it as "wank". It definitely isn't the same manufacturer.

GS, in my modest opinion there is nothing wrong with the make of motherboard used, and no real reason why the music has been moved. I would have a word with the people who have installed and explain your problem, I am sure they will soon be able to remedy the problem for you.

UG, if all they have done is replace the motherboard, there is no real reason as to why the HDD's have been alloted different drive letters, other than the guy has swapped around their positioning on the cable(s). I would take the pc back, along with your camera and point out how long it takes to load up the photo's. Inform them you will not be happy until it they load at lease as fast ( remembering this is a newer motherboard, so therefore should contain extra on-board cache or be a faster bus speed ) and request it be fixed and tested in your presence. Also ask for a break down of the price. When they hit you with the motherboard costs £68 plus vat, point out you can order one for the price you specified. If not happy with them, tell them your next port of call is citizens advice bureau.

By the way, when you said your pc wasn't working, what exactly happened with it. Was it completely dead, as in no lights on keyboard etc. did it try to boot up but fail with a series of bleeps? If there was no power at all, I would have suspected a faulty power supply which would have cost roughly £15 to £20 to replace.

Dave,

The monitor wasn't recognising anything being plugged in "No Video Input" and the CD drives weren't opening. I think the motherboard had probably gone and he did say he tested it.

I gave them a call today and asked for a breakdown of costs and he said he'd ring me back in the next couple of days.

To be honest, I don't want to give them the thing back again unless they offer to do it on the spot and for free.
