I know next to nothing about computers.

We want to buy one for our gaff. We need to be able to access broadband internet, and I will be working from home a little bit, so Excel and Word would be handy (although a mate may have pirate MS Office).

What should I buy? I do not want something overly fancy. I am sure some of the computer geeks will suggest something that does everything bar give me a blowjob; all I want is a fast machine that doesn't fuck up.

Is this any good for £600?

I'm trying to make my TTF substitutions and mine keeps going down on me

A colleague in chambers told me this afternoon that his Dell had crashed big time . I had a laptop from them in the past . I was not overly impressed

Barry, I have a Packard Bell laptop and it is not top of the range but does everything I ask of it and has yet to fuck up. £580 it cost me.

WLAN is a must.

A fast HARD DRIVE is a must.

Lots of RAM is a must.

Easy to get,but not at £600

If,as you say,you want a fast Computer that won't F--k up.

You'd be hard pressed to buy anything these days that won't easily be enough for broadband and office - it's only really multimedia stuff like games, hi-def video playback, video editing etc. that you need serious horsepower for. Just don't skimp on memory!

On the other hand, for the blowjob option:

Mesh do pretty good PC. I have never had a problem with them, although i've only had 2. Dell's have a pretty good name as well. I would not advise buying one from high street shops though since you can get better specs from computer makers such as Mesh for about the same price.

LIDL when advertised have a brilliant spec P-C @ £759 the best spec I have actually seen on a p-c under 1K... but they only come on offer/sale occasionally..its got a very good software bundle as well..........

I would buy one of these if I never had the ability to build my own.....

To build your own as per mine!!!! it cost me about £500 but the spec is very very(Colin) good I can assure you............... :P its old fashioned now its 18 months old I was considering whether to buy myself a new tower as the one I have is basic looking but its what's inside that counts.............

oh I bought an LCD 19" FLAT SCREEN in July............

P.S. THE GUARANTEE IS 3 YEARS AND THEY HAVE A HELP LINE FREE FOR 1 YR...
SO YOU WONT BETTER THAT EITHER............... :o

Baz, my father has just bought that pc ( minus the monitor as already had a tft ). If you could get them to increase the memory to 1gb, it would be excellent.

My Dell laptop is brilliant and I have never had any problems with Dell PCs - I use them at work & my mother has one. They'd be my first port of call, for sure.

I need a new computer too, as my office was broken into on Monday night and my computer stolen. They also took the keyboard and the monitor and the petty cash tin and that was all! The alarms went off but no one came to have a look this time - although they normally do.

Luckily, all my e-mails were backed up until 6th December on the server and many of my documents, but I have lost lots of photos which I hadn't had time to put on CD. This would not normally bother me, but many of them were of my dear late Mum.

The police came round in about 3 hours and managed to get a nice footprint for analysis, but I don't think they will ever catch anyone.

I had my Mum's old computer at home so I am using her's for now.

An apple?

Just bought a new Dell for 650. Fully loaded laptop and it is very good

Inspiron 1300

What I like about Dell is that you can pick the system you want and then customise it up the wazoo so you get the exact pc you want, not a close match, found the website very easy to use too. The only prob I had was that they emailed me the credit agreement to sign but I dont have a printer, they seemed very reluctant to post a copy to me so i ended up just paying by mastercard

Sounds like the one I got Ovverbruv - an Inspiron 630m. It's great & I'm very happy with it. Cost about the same as yours too. It's a right smart little machine!
