Anyone know anything about this?

Apparently it kicks in tomorrow and, typically, NHS IT have just decided to warn us all about it now.

This is the advice our IT department are giving about it:

Home PC's

- Generally it is recommended to use the windows update (Google "Windows Update" ) facility to ensure security patches are regularly updated automatically - be aware if you haven't done this for some time it could be a lengthy process.

- If you specifically want the Microsoft patch for the current threat then the information and link is http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/dd452420.aspx

- IMPORTANT. If you go to any other site than Microsoft for a Conficker patch please make sure its from a reputable security vendor as there have been a number of instances of fake web sites that SELL software purporting to be anti virus but are actually themselves malware. When it comes to security - trust no-one!

As a result of the above steps hopefully we will all have a quiet day at work tomorrow and it will pass entirely uneventfully.

I understand that one of the features of this Conficker is that it will prevent a PC from connecting to the Windows Update web-site.
So, if you can't get to http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate, then you've probably got it .... in which case, you'll need someone else to d/load the specific patch for you.
Applies to home PCs, not NHS administered ones, of course. Or any PC not on a properly administered network ...

just what do unicorns get up to in the wee hours?

That was taken from Lyall Watson's "Supernature" and appealed to my rather quirky humour.

It was the outcome of an experiment to do with metabolic rates in different creatures. Just for interest the biologist involved added a random set of numbers to be attributed to a unicorn and was very surprised to find that he got a coherent outcome.
