VINCENT O’BRIEN COUNTY HANDICAP HURDLE – Analysis
Champion trainer Paul Nicholls has won three of the past six renewals of this two-mile handicap hurdle with Sporazene (2004), Desert Quest (2006) and American Trilogy (2009). He is responsible for four of the 109 entries, the pick being Grade One Christmas Hurdle fifth Pepe Simo. Tito Bustillo is a smart novice, while the others are Qozak and the classy former Czech-trained Apartman.
Jonjo O’Neill, successful with Master Tern in 2000, has entered an unbeaten pair. Get Me Out Of Here saw off the David Pipe-trained Ronaldo Des Mottes to win the Grade Three Totesport Trophy at Newbury this month, while Rock Noir was last seen defeating the Edward O’Grady-trained Jumbo Rio in a Grade One at Auteuil in November.
Nicky Henderson won this race with Thumbs Up (1993) and Barna Boy (1997) and has entered classy novice Bellvano, Fairyland, Eradicate and Afsoun.
A competitive entry also includes the likes of Blue Bajan, El Dancer, Mamlook, Greatwood Hurdle runner-up Harry Tricker, and Silk Affair, winner of the 2009 Fred Winter Juvenile Novices’ Handicap Hurdle at The Festival.
As well as Jumbo Rio, the 32 Irish-trained entries include 2008 Vincent O’Brien County Hurdle victor Silver Jaro, trained by Tom Hogan, the Sabrina Harty-trained Won In The Dark, 2006 Seasons Holidays Queen Mother Champion Chase winner Newmill, the Willie Mullins-trained Tawaag and Silverhand from the Noel Meade yard.

THE VINCENT O’BRIEN COUNTY HANDICAP HURDLE FACTS AND FIGURES
1. Vincent O'Brien's record at The Festival was outstanding with 23 victories, including four Gold Cups, three Champion Hurdles, 10 Supreme Novices’ Hurdles and a flurry of supporting races. This will be the 15th year that the County Hurdle bears the name of Vincent O’Brien, who retired from training in 1994.
2. The first County Hurdle was run in 1920, and won by Trespasser, ridden by George Duller, who until 1973 also had a race named after him at Cheltenham's premier meeting.
3. The County Hurdle has suffered more abandonments than any other race at The Festival. Since the war, the race has been lost on five occasions, most recently in 2001 because of the foot and mouth crisis.
4. The race has been a favourite for the Irish with 10 winners since 1953.
5. The longest-priced winner in recent years was Silver Jaro at 50/1 in 2008.
6. The fastest time for the winning horse is 3 mins 51.2 secs by Moody Man in 1990.
7. In 1998, Blowing Wind picked up an additional £50,000 bonus having won the Imperial Cup at Sandown Park the previous weekend. The bonus was offered by Sunderlands, bookmaking sponsor of the Imperial Cup at the time, to any horse that won the Sandown race and then any contest at The Festival.

I don't have great record in this race but it has dug me out of the mire once or twice. I think Desert Quest was my last winner. Master Tern and Home Counties are others I remember. Also Grande Jete stumbling at the last with the race at his mercy in Fontanesi's year.
 
If Get Me Out Of Here runs in this rather than the Supreme Novice, jump on it. I'm expecting him to go for the opener though.

I can't be having that Secret Dancer is a 20/1 shot for this. His run in the Novice Hurdle at the November meeting when a fast finishing third to Loosen My Load and Some Present is top notch form in the context of this, Christian Williams lost his iron when travelling well jumping two out at which point the front two got away from him - the fifth horse that day was Tito Bustillo (2lbs worse off for 4 length defeat), whilst the sixth was Morrison's Sleepy Hollow who was running a blinder until running out in the Neptune on Wednesday.

Prior to Cheltenham Secret Dancer had sluiced up in a novices hurdle at Uttoxeter when well backed, you'll struggle to see an easier winner this season whilst the runner-up High Gales (beaten 9 lengths) has since won two Novice hurdles (Hereford and Stratford) and beat the World Hurdle sixth Oscar Dan Dan at Navan last time out.
 
PS Fair dues to the lad that covers the northern tracks on ATR. He was doing Hexham yest and said Howard Johnson was keen on a big run from Arcalis. 10/1 for a place, thank you very much.
 
Yes. I got 11/1 place only. Helped nicely. Possibly would have won if asked for its effort a bit sooner, I'd have to suggest.
 
I had a good bet on it place only. I had a small win bet on it at very long odds at Betfair. That alone would have paid a lot more than the place-only return!
