Crufts

Hope you enjoy it, Helen - it's Hound day, I believe!

I shall be there on Sunday, showing a Weimaraner in Special Puppy Dog, cursing because we have to be in the ring at 8.30 am!!!!!!! Which means another ungodly start....

The pup is one I bred last year (some of you may remember the puppy photos!!) and belongs to a friend. I gave up showing dogs (mainly because watching paint dry was more exciting) about 8 years ago, when I had the great pleasure of this pup's great grand-dam winning Best Bitch for me. I agreed in a weak moment to take him to the last Championship Show of 2005 in December (the last opportunity to qualify for Crufts), having never taken the pup to either Ringcraft or any local shows for practice.

Luckily for me, the dog's a natural-born show dog (again, just like his gt grandmamma) and he breezed his Minor Puppy class and then won best Puppy dog - made me look good, anyway!!

So wish us luck on Sunday (we'll need it....) !!

I hope he'll place but I've been too long out of the ring to do really well - it's like anyother animal beauty compo - plenty of face judging!

Still, his whole 'family' are going and they're very proud their dog qualified and the main thing is that they enjoy a good day out

Today is working dogs and Pastoral. Sounds like their should be a lot of vicars and builders there.

What category are you entered in?

I don't show anything :) a friend of mine did well today she won best veteran bitch with her Giant Schnauzer,

I'm into Springers but as they are on Sunday this year & thats a nightmare I'll wait till next year to see them on the Thursday

Good luck on Sunday ;)

I went on Gundog day a few years ago and loved it. My dog trainer was showing her Irish Water Spaniel so I went along to support her, did lots and lots of shopping and admired all my favourite breeds of dog. I thoroughly enjoyed the Discover Dogs section and came away declaring that my mutt Zara wasn't just a mongrel afterall, she was infact a Hoverwart

Yes, I spelt it wrong though, it's Hovawart.

These are real Hovawarts:

Probably 100% mongrel but it was nice to see something that looked like her

Oh, yes, Dims. They have a special 'Ladies Night' for girl doggies, where they can win prizes for Most Beautiful Collar, Most Original Booties, and Swankiest Leash. Last year's were won by three poodles from Dubai, wearing some serious duty-free bling...

Good luck, Jools! Just remember how well the low-cut top and tight leather pants worked last time...
Look, I know that there are more gays showing dogs than there are straight people but honestly, I don't think Hilda P (our honourable judge) is one and I sure as hell ain't!

I'm into Springers
Poor you!!!! We had our elderly Springer bitch put down a few months ago and I'd really forgotten what bloody lunatics they are as she'd been frail for years. I went to a friend's house for dinner and was accosted by the most insane puppy (well, he's about 6 months old) charging around, jumping up and generally acting loopy. They've got the most gorgeous long haired GSD as well (he's only 2) who is really amusing to watch as his whole air is "bloody kids!". My dad is on about getting a pair of Springer puppies now to replace Purdy - that is a nightmare in the making as he's crap at training dogs and spoils them rotten. Two lunatic, untrained, spoilt Springer puppies - can't wait!! :what:

Good luck with the pup Jules!

Thanks for that piece of doggy general knowledge, Griffin. Its amazing what you can learn from this forum!

I had a Hovawart until about 2 months ago - he was a huge bear, who did little but insist on being stroked, and sleep. He died though, (wed had him as a rescue, and boy did he come on in the year we had him - i wont go into it, but he was kept in an aviary on bare concrete, not walked and basically not cared for very well(make that at all...).) They are great dogs to own though, soft as butter, but you wouldnt argue with one!! Katy adored him, and has taken a long time to get over him going away. ( incidentally, i've taken her to crufts twice, we were 5th in the Junior bitch ESS class, and the next year I got invited back for a demonstraion team.) Great day out, wish I could go this year, but I;m working.

I love dogs but I watch Crufts with mixed feelings.

I hate seeing dogs manicured and coiffed just for show.

I really like the challenge events.

I hate seeing bulldogs etc as they look to have health problems bred into them just for the sake of breeding and showing.

I like the buzz there seems to be but am glad it's only once per year.

I like the TV host's black lab.

I could go on...
