Hi there

Thought I'd start a thread where horse racing boffs could share their favourite bad ass guitar riffs. If there's a riff which is real crunchy and you think that other people should know of it then slam it here.

White Zombie - Thunder Kiss '65
Crucifix - Religion Kills
Oasis - F***ing in the Bushes - *wasn't that on the Racing Channel a few year back?*
Iggy Pop - I Wanna Be Your Dog
Butthole Surfers - The Lord Is A Monkey
Beastie Boys - Sabotage
Stone Roses - Love Spreads *opening riff is probably the best ever*
Machine Head - Imperium *i dont care if it IS nu-metal*
Behemoth - Slaves shall serve
Sepultura - Roots
Ocean Colour Scene - The Riverboat Song
Propaghandi - Showdown
Stone Cold Steve Austin's theme :D

That should keep me rocking for now.

Some people call it so, especially that song. Granted, pissed up deathmetal headed students, but they're still people.

Edited to add Broken Face by The Pixies to the list.

1. Smoke On The Water - Deep Purple
2. Sunshine Of Your Love - Cream
3. Layla - Derek And The Dominos
4. Satisfaction - Rolling Stones
5. Iron Man - Black Sabbath
6. Heartbreaker - Led Zeppelin
7. Sweet Child O' Mine - Guns N Roses
8. Back In Black - AC/DC
9. Johnny B Goode - Chuck Berry
10. You Really Got Me - The Kinks

to name but a few, the list is endless though.

Metallica - Seek and Destroy
Isengard - Vinterskugge
Sepultura - Territory
Megadeth - Wake Up Dead
Celtic Frost - Jewel Throne
S.O.D. - March of the S.O.D.
Emperor - Cromlech (cover)
Slayer - Piece by Piece
Pearl Jam - Corduroy
Kreator - After The Attack
Cult of Luna - Vague Illusions
Dio - Holy Diver
The Smashing Pumpkins - Geek U.S.A

Any mention of Guitars and i can not resist contributing.

I have been playing the Electric Guitar for over 17 years now. I would love to perform for a living, but unfortunately that isn't the case, yet anyway, and probably never will be.
So if i may be so bold as to add a long list of Electric (mostly instrumental) Guitarists you really should check out, all of them world class players. You may have heard of a few of these or you may not of.

Joe Satriani
Steve Vai
Andy Timmons
Yngwie Malmsteen
John Petrucci (Dream Theater)
Jan Cyrka
Neil Brocklebank
Eric Johnson
Paul Gilbert
Rusty Cooley
Allan Holdsworth
Greg Howe
Shawn Lane
Guthrie Govan

the list could go on and on.

Any musicians amongst you.

i think it's fair to say that it is the most important interest i have. The Guitar literally is my life.
Could this be too much to cope with?

Jss - THANK YOU!! I have a couple of Joe Satriani CD's which I bang on about when guitars are mentioned, but I haven't found anyone up 'til now who seems aware of him. He's just been so innovative and ENERGETIC - wow, I was blown away the first time I listened.

I'm also pretty keen on the late and lovely Rory Gallagher, and perhaps I'm alone in thinking that Eric Clapton became Eric Clapped-out once he strayed into solo commercial territory, where doing the minimum seemed to be his style?

I`m not into this guitar wankery at all. For me it`s all about quality of product, and Clapton was never in the same league as someone like Elton John for example.

I love the opening riff in the Gigolo Aunts' Where I Find My Heaven - it was the title music for Game On and was in the Dumb And Dumber soundtrack. Other favourites are the [already mentioned] Riverboat Song, Green Day's Holiday, Razorlight's Golden Touch, The Killers' Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine, Mr Brightside and Andy, You're A Star and a load of Counting Crows' songs, including Angels Of The Silences, Mr Jones and Rain King.

Krizon-Instrumental Rock is obviously a more specialist form of music so most people wouldn't have heard of Satch (who is incidentally my favourite player).

Most guitarist's have heard of him though as he is one of the best known and most respected instrumental players around and has been for the past 2 decades.I have all of his cd's.His latest studio album "Super Colossal" has just recently been released and is well worth owning.I saw him perform live in 1998,2000 and 2002.
He's over here in June again. He tour's the UK and Europe every couple of years.Well worth going to see.

Which Satriani Cd's do you have Krizon.

You really want to check out Andy Timmons who i like almost as much as Satch.Phenomenal player. His new Cd "Resolution" is released on May 1st.This guy plays any and every style going. He really is an awesome player.

All of them are stupendous players.

Brilliant.

Just about to snooze in prep for Brighton tomorrow, but thought I'd see what you thought of Joe S ('Satch'!), jss. The two CDs I've got are SURFING WITH THE ALIEN and DREAMING # 11. 'Surfing' is just amazing (to me, untutored, apart from a gallant but hideously tuneless attempt in the 60s to learn acoustic). I checked out his web a few months back and was astounded at his catalogue. Where is he appearing this June, do you know? I really would like to try to get a ticket if I can. Cheers for the other info - I'll take a look anon, but now it's time for Uncle Ned. ;)

He is appearing at the following venues:-

June 16th Fri Apollo Theatre Manchester (saw him perform there in 1998 and 2002)
June 17th Sat City Hall Newcastle (saw him perform there in 2000)
June 18th Sun Royal Concert Hall Glasgow
June 19th Mon Symphony Hall Birmingham
June 20th Tue Hammersmith Apollo London
June 21st Wed Pavilion Theatre Bournemouth
June 22nd Thu St.Davids Hall Cardiff

Tickets still available at Manchester Apollo and Hammersmith Apollo.

In my opinion and most guitarist's opinion for that matter he is one of the finest electric guitar players in the world and has been for the past 20 years.A guitarist 's guitarist.Admired by so many other players. He is a very tasteful, fluid and melodic player who has total command of the instrument. Not a show off.He knows when to play fast and when to play slow and has great bluesy timing.
One of the giants of modern electric playing.

Surfing with the Alien (which was his 2nd album) was his breakthrough, released back in 1987.But in my opinion, Flying in a Blue Dream (1989) and The Extremist (1992) are even better.Crystal Planet is also a fantastic album (1998).Everyone of his albums is worth listening too,but i believe those four are probably his best thus far, even though you might think differently.

Thanks for all that, jss - I'm pleased to see I picked a winner, then! I'll order up some more of his CDs, I really admire his work and enjoy the variety of stuff he plays, too.

Interstellar Overdrive - Pink Floyd (cover band Ummagumma do an excellent version - well worth checking out).
Sunshine Of Your Love - Cream
Listen Up - Oasis
Eight Miles High - The Byrds (not sure if that actually counts as a "riff")
All Along The Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix
Rock n Roll - Led Zeppelin
Taxman/Start - The Beatles/The Jam

ooo forgot one

How Soon Is Now - The Smiths

RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE - WAKE UP

This ballad is the closing song in the first Matrix film. Quality.

Metallica-Seek and Destroy-as mentioned before!!
Iron Maiden- Two Miutes to Midnight
Iron Maiden-most of their songs-Sanctuary, Wicker Man, too many to mention
ACDC- Hells Bells Highway to Hell
Metallica- Enter Sandman
Sabbath-Every Song!!!
Thats enough for now
