Dragging this one up again as today is the start of Merseysides police seven day amnesty on illegal dogs whereby anybody owning an illegal breed or 'type' can hand their dog over without fear of prosecution. I suspect the only dogs who will be signed over and killed will be the much loved family pets of scared and innocent folk. You cannot just take your dog to the police station, you have to contact them and arrange for them to collect it from your home, and of course drug dealers and those involved in dog fighting are bound to invite the law into their homes aren't they? And the amnesty is only for illegal dogs and their 'type', it does not include other dogs that are known to be dangerous or vicious, so it's not actually targeting those dogs who are indeed dangerous and likely to attack.

I don't know if there any members living in the Merseyside area but it is worth them and indeed anybody who owns a dog who could be interpreted as a pit bull type dog knowing their rights and the things they should and should not do if they are approached by the police. DeedNOTBreed have an excellent site here

Even the Kennel Club advised Merseyside police not to have an amnesty as they too recognised it would not make the area any safer and the only thing to come from it would be the deaths of innocent dogs. I dread to think how many are going to die needlessly this week.
