The greatest British dual purpose trainer Elsiie has announced his retirement.
As a jump jockey used he ride for Ron Smyth with John Sutcliffe also in the fold; that trio forgot more about plotting handicaps than most will ever learn.
I believe he was de facto trainer of Red Candle, winner of 1973 Hennessey but correct me on that one also.
From Raffia Set winning a few sprints through Heighlin, Desert Orchid, In The Groove, Barnbrook Again, Rhyme and Reason, Indian Ridge, Floyd, Persian Punch to Arabian Queen David has punched well above his weight .
Wishing him a happy happy retirement well earned.

In 1991 I bought the timeform Blackpool for Cheltenham and there was an interview with David Elsworth and he said if there was a better 4yr old than Oh So Risky then he hadnt seen it.so I took the 25/1 and did it in a lucky 15 with Harrison Savannah (gold cup) and Seagram that won the Ritz,as it was then.i had 3 grand going on to a 10/1 in the county hurdle and it finished 3rd.

He was a great trainer and I trusted him that day. Cant believe its 30 yrs ago.

For some reason I was never into David Elsworth that much as a trainer which is really strange considering his achievments.

Probably because when I backed Dessie he lost and if I bet against him he won:lol:.

Why is he retiring? he's 82 going on 52 looking at him

Hope he has a very happy retirement

I was just reading an article didn't realize he trained a fav National horse of mines Rhyme N Reason and the brilliant QMCC winner Barnbrook Again

I must have been more into the horse than I was the trainer at the time to have forgotten that,

By all accounts not the easiest man to work for, very much a man who called a shovel a shovel and not one to suffer fools gladly. Certainly knows what he is doing around horses.

I'm old enough to remember him race-riding and if my memory is right I believe I backed his first winner as a trainer, now that is "after-timing" for you.

Good trainer but as you say not easy to work for. I remember a former member (Fudge) on here telling me that.
