Once again, proof that the general populace should not be allowed near a polling station. A courageous and progressive politician who deserves more credit than anyone else for the relative peace on this island today, and for the opportunities for a lasting stability, seemingly being spurned by others.

He deserved better than that.

Jeffrey Donaldson depressingly got re-elected too. The man who, at the last elections, promised to work within the Ulster Unionist party to try to divert it to his Anti-Agreement ticket. Who, once his self-serving bid for the party leadership was clearly rejected, abandoned ship and went to join the DUP. Lagan Valley has always been a UUP stronghold, but the voters seemed to want to vote in a man who seems to set his own desire for leadership ahead of the desires of his constituents.

Voters have depressingly short memories. The only positive I can take from this election is this: you can only make peace with your enemies. In a funny sort of way, perhaps the polarisation of the parties to the two extreme viewpoints will force them to work together to some extent - after all, there are virtually no other elected representatives to talk to!

Yes I am sad that one of the architects of the peace was deposed . Trimble tried to lasoo the moon and god bless him for his good intentions but the divisions within his party and unionism put paid to that . He hasn't handled his party's division well . I did not want to see the electorate polarised as the results suggest because we have no hope of moving forward for the next 4 years
Trimble actually tried to make inroads into the situation here . At that time he was on his own . He led the only attempt at joint rule. He was the only politician brave enough to put his career on the line at that time .
However in the current climate most unionists have opted for the DUP simply because most feel too many concessions have been given to Sinn Fein . I have to qualify that . If we were talking about concessions to the SDLP I think most unionists would be prepared to listen . In fact in Mark Durcan's constituency alot of unionists tacticly voted in his favour to keep Mitchel McLoughlin out . I fear what will come from such a polarised voted though. Please not 4 years more of stasis .
