I think this is in the correct forum despite the title. Not quite finished but nearly there. Thought you equine-enthusiasts might like to see it...Excuse the poor quality photography....

It's quite weird seeing the compressed angle of his near-hind - it looks like a bag of marbles, but that's as it is in the photo. If I'd seen that leg without the evidence of the photo, I'd have said you'd oversized the hock and over-elongated the pastern, but against the photo, it's correct. The foreshortening of the shot also exaggerates his body size - he really does look to earn the nickname 'The Tank' and have quite massive joints.

What did you do, Mark? Did you do an enlarged photo image which you drew round and then coloured in?

It's lovely, :) are you planning to sell it or keep it?

Agree with Kri about that hind, sometimes positions that horses get into look very odd indeed.

What I rreally like about this is his head, it looks like him. Plenty of equine artists can paint a horse but not the one they are trying to paint, if you know what I mean!

Thank you all for the kind comments.

I suppose the hind leg does look a bit strange in the photo, but my style is very much leaning towards 'photo-realism' so I copy what I see. I don't know enough about equine anatomy to be able to have altered it.

Kri - No, I didn't 'trace it' - a few hours of painstakingly copying the outline, frequently measuring to compare with the proportions on the photo. If you looked very closely you would notice slight dissimilarities. Thinking about it, I probably should trace the outline to save a lot of time. It's not as if anyone could do it if they tried tracing:p

Isinglass - I couldn't sell it as I would be in breach of copyright as I found the photo on the net  :). It's for a mates birthday.

Bar - Kauto Star is three pages behind

I did notice a few dissimilarities, but then someone tracing an enlarged shot would probably chuck in a few, so that the photographer wouldn't sue for misuse of copyright! I noticed that you haven't quite married the near-fore hoof across the near-hind pastern, for example... I imagine that if you inscribe it "after a photograph by XXX" you won't infringe the photographer's copyright, if you didn't get prior permission to crib!
