Scotland tops list of world's most violent countries

A UNITED Nations report has labelled Scotland the most violent country in the developed world, with people three times more likely to be assaulted than in America. The murder rate was also higher than that in the USA.

The study, based on telephone interviews with victims of crime in 21 countries, found that more than 2,000 Scots were attacked every week, almost ten times the official police figures. They include non-sexual crimes of violence and serious assaults.

Violent crime has doubled in Scotland over the past 20 years and levels, per head of population, are now comparable with cities such as Rio de Janeiro, Johannesburg and Tbilisi.

The attacks have been fuelled by a “booze and blades” culture in the west of Scotland which has claimed more than 160 lives over the past five years. Since January there have been 13 murders, 145 attempted murders and 1,100 serious assaults involving knives in the west of Scotland. The problem is made worse by sectarian violence, with hospitals reporting higher admissions following Old Firm matches.

David Ritchie, an accident and emergency consultant at Glasgow’s Victoria Infirmary, said that the figures were a national disgrace. “I am embarrassed as a Scot that we are seeing this level of violence. Politicians must do something about this problem. This is a serious public health issue. Violence is a cancer in this part of the world,” he said.

Detective Chief Superintendent John Carnochan, head of the Strathclyde Police’s violence reduction unit, said the problem was chronic and restricting access to drink and limiting the sale of knives would at least reduce the problem.

Strangely enough, over the past 30 minutes I have felt strongly compelled to chib some bam in my office. This feeling has been intermingled with thoughts along the lines of "fuck it, you can shove your job down your japs eye, I'm going to the pub to get steaming".

So I guess it must be true.

There was a programme on television a couple of weeks ago (part of a series I think) which focussed on this very issue.

I was somewhat amused when they interviewed the family of a young man who "couldnae even walk the streets ae where he grew up" who had been stabbed and left for dead in the Pollok area of Glasgow.

A female relative averred "I wish I could get my hands on the folk that did it. I would decapitate them. (pause). And then I'd shove the heid up his arse."

Quite delightful.

 I watched that programme as well, that was a classic quote all right

Another interesting one was McIntyre's report into the gang warfare in Glasgow between Ferris and McGraw. I was intrigued to find out that stabbing somebody up his own arse is the Glasgow signature. Some nice characters on that programme as well

I've never felt threatened in Glasgow but I'd be wary of visiting certain districts late at night. I reckon the figures are overstated. I've heard of violence in and around Ayr and Port Glasgow (30 miles west along the southern bank of the Clyde) is a bit of a hotspot for drugs and violence.

That was a superb quote, though.

Like most of it. It's easier to think of areas that you would be quite happy to go to at night.

It's no place either for a racknophobe (an unnatural fear of being stretched), what with that folding rack mob running amok.

It's ages since I visited Glasgie, but I toddled about of an evening feeling it was a very jolly, colourful place, helped by the jolly, colourful language of the jolly, colourful characters who occasionally lurched, unbidden, out of doorways to no doubt offer me the jolly, colourful greetings of the native Glaswegian. I found that employing a rather patrician, crystal-clear English voice with "How DO you do, my DEAR chap?", and clapping them heartily on their shoulders, had them scuttling back to the safety of their bolt-holes. They're very nervous, y'know.
