I am considering embarking on a journey into the hiterto unknown world of digital cameras. As I know sod all about them I would be grateful for any advice. I don't want something too expensive at this early stage but at the same time I don't want something too basic that I will want to upgrade in a couple of months. Above all it must be idiot-proof and tough enough to survive being dropped and banged about.

Most important thing Trip, is it needs to have an "optical" zoom and not just a digital zoom. Second thing would be the amount of megapixel depth I would imagine.

The Digi Camera world is fantastic Triptych. Try to buy a brand you know, there are quite a lot on the market which are not well known and are very basic. The higher the mega pixels the better.
I bought a Canon a couple of years ago, and its been brilliant, easy to use, great software, but now I am going to venture into the world of Digital SLR. I have my Nikon on order and I cannot wait!

I have recently bought a digital camera from Amazon and after a month or so, they have finally told me. They could not obtain the item. However, they did delivered the memory card.......now i have a memory card but no camera.

Thanks Amazon.

Generally, though when i buy CD or games from Amazon they are satisfactory.

That cam looks pretty good for the price Triptych. I think Carl Zeiss lens are well thought of. Sony generally make good gear so I think it would do the job you are after.
I have a Canon IXUS500 and I love it.

HAVE A LOOK AT THE GALLERY too TRYP...................

HERES MINE had it 18 months 5 million pixels guarantee 3 yrs can buy them at LIDL for £150 about.... I went to the I.O.W. last week end and took 113 photos on a 256 card 20 more shots if needed... some good shots ?(BUT ANY PROBLEMS WITH light settings owing to different conditions i.e. under exposure or over can then be rectified on your p/c and it comes with a software package) changed batteries twice AA size rechargable... but for the money and guarantee this is a very good camera....

But the SLR I have with all the lenses is a MINOLTA 8000 PRO Camera obviously you need to put film in this one....
