My digital camera suffered a catastrophic end on holiday in France a few weeks ago when it got involved in an altercation with a bottle of Evian.

I was wondering if anyone had any reccommendations for a good quality digital camera which would be ideal for taking to the races (i.e. photographing moving objects well) as well as a good all round one to carry on holiday?

I've looked on various websites and they all contain jargon which means nothing to me or I'm being a bit girly and saying "oooh that looks nice."

I don't want to spend more than £200 really, it is only a camera I'll use once a fortnight after all!

Many Thanks in advance...

That sounds like the terminology that I use "that one looks nice" speaking of which there is a nice looking camera on the back of the current Argos cat that I was eyeing up until I was made redundant last week!

I know nothing about digital cameras, but was looking into getting them one myself. A friend recommended me to buy off www.expansys.ie, I think .com is the English version.

The price of a €240 euro camera that I was looking at is €380 in camera shops. Maybe your high street camera shops over there are more competitive, but I'd advise you to check out that site for comparison when you do settle on a choice.

2 things I was told. Get 5m pixels at least and get optical zoom rather that digital.

I've got a Nikon Coolpix 5600, I know nothing of digital cameras but it lets me resize my pics any time after i've taken them and save them a seperate pic which I think's pretty cool.

Check out Jessops though too at Fitzalan Square (near Ponds Forge) Gamla Stan and see what they have and how they can help you.

Just looking at the Jessops website, most of the prices are 10-30% more expensive than expansys on the cameras I'm looking at.

Canon Ixus 750 £212(E) compared to £250(J)
Canon Powershot A620 £204 compared to £278
Canon Ixus 800 £289 compared to £378

The one that was cheaper was ...

Canon Powershot A700 £253 compared to £230

... where Jessops had a special offer of £120 discount. Maybe that is their thing, to have good special offers on products at any given time.

Why am I looking at Canon cameras? I have absolutely no idea, you have to start somewhere.

(I have no connection with expansys, btw. They just seem to be good value for money)

Ill do some research in a bit as a couple of forums I use have a lot of users into photography, one thing - unless they have changed recently - Jessops will price match internet sites :)

I bought this camera about a month ago and it really is excellent. It's easy to use, there are several different modes for taking pictures in different conditions, the zoom is superb, the picture quality is excellent & it doesn't eat the batteries! Kodak Z740

OK, couple of quick ones too look at

http://www2.fujifilm.co.uk/shop/refurb/shop.php

Some cheap refurbished ones there well within your budget, and people who have bought from there say they are like new

The S7000 is supposed to be good, pic from one below

Also on Amazon for £199.99

Amazon are pretty competitive for other camera's too

S7000 also reviewed here. For what it's worth Steve's Digicam's is an excellent review site if you are thinking of buying a camera!

Just to say, speaking from experience that Jessops are brilliant at selling cameras, BUT, they are not very good on their after sales service. I have learnt from this and will only buy from a local independant retailer, who have been extremely helpful, knowledgeable and offer discounts on anything.

As the world's leading exponent of Crap Digital Photography, I can recommend my Sony Cyber-Shot as an at least partial (and comparatively cheap) solution to CDP syndrome. The camera can't compensate entirely for the idiot behind it but it does try!!

Not sure what its worth but I've been told that www.7dayshop.com are the place to go for camera stuff - their advantage may be their shipping to Ireland policies, but its what I have been recommended when I was on the look out a while ago. Myabe it was only for accessories...just passing it on...

A friend asked me the same question today. She is not too hot at using the internet but wants a non flashy digital camera for about £150.00 from a HIogh Street stote. Can anyone suggest something pretty idiot proof. That's not to say she is an idiot of course.

There's a '50 best digital cameras and camcorders' feature in the Independent today. High up in the budget section are the Fujifilm FinePix A500 from Jessops at £99.99, the Nikon Coolpix L4 at £109.99, the Canon Powershot A430 at £148.99, the Olympus FE140 at £123.77 from Amazon and the Pentax Optio E10 at £99.99.

I bought the Fujifilm FinePix A310 a couple of years ago. Only 3Mpix but I've been quite happy with it and the software.

I have had the Fujifilm F600 ( superceeded by F610 ) which is 6mb for a couple of years now and agree easy to use camera and software.

I bought a Samsung Digimax V800 8.1 pixels about three months ago in Dixons in Cardiff they was on offer at £170 at the time, i think the price in Argos is £199 at the moment, its a pretty good camera with Schneider Lens. It has a vast built in menu, many permutations.

Regards.

Terry.

 I want a Canon 400 / 2.8 ef supertelephoto  Anyone willing to donate £5.5k

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. :) I will print this out and she can then make up her own mind.
