If someone does not own any property and no large sum of money is involved will a DIY will suffice?

Its for nominal amounts of money & sentimental items

You can get a programme that sets up a legal form but I believe that just writing out what you wish to give and to whom will suffice so long as you head it as your last will and testament, appoint an executor and have it signed by two witnesses - who cannot be beneficiaries.

Always a good idea to set out some form of will as in some parts of the country your estate could go direct to whoever has overall ownership of the land in your part of the country (Duchy of Cornwall, Lancaster etc).

The chap next door to us in Cheltenham died intestate and all the contents of his bank and property went to the Queen, although the Crown did sell the property back to his tenants at a very low price.

You can buy DIY Wills from most good stationers, Aldaniti, then follow the instructions as per Redhead. Even if you don't own a house, property counts as a bike or a car, even furnishings, kitchen equipment, etc. If you think nobody would want any of that, you could stipulate it be sold and the proceeds given to Mrs Bloggs, or donated to the charity of your choice.

If you have a pet, you might want to stipulate to whom the pet should be entrusted, and perhaps leave a bit of money to them to help care for it. Don't know if you have a horse, but, if you do, you might think to ask any horsey friends if they'd like him when you've passed. I put in my Will that Songsheet was to inherit my half of the mares and foals I had, plus £1000 towards their keep, for example. That sets your mind at rest about Mr Tinkles or whoever!

Thanks all

That was pretty much what i was going to do, WH smiths sell them, I will be leaving everything to my son who is 18 in feb so I don't need to work out childcare type things, most of it will be what Krizon mentions above especially the pets etc also I know how difficult it was when mum died knowing what she would have wanted regarding a funeral etc so that will all be going in there
