Drifts badly, slowly away, never at the races - should exchange layers be transparent

Interesting read-when Flutter started you could see who laid or part laid your bet-unfortunately such transparency is long gone never to return.
 
I don't doubt it goes on, but probably less than you think. There is a tendency for humans to see patterns in randomness - especially when they've lost money on it.

For argument's sake let's say 1/4 of horses are slowly away. Turning to late betting moves, let's say 1/3 are drifters, 1/3 shorten and 1/3 remain broadly static in price. In this scenario you end up with one horse in twelve (so one per race, give or take) being a late drifter that's slowly away, without any skulduggery.

As far as transparency goes obviously the authorities have the necessary info. I know a lad whose job is constantly monitoring betfair to look for suspicious betting patterns.

All the above withstanding, when you see certain jockeys and trainers doing it you can be fairly sure it's not random...
