Ok , two talking horse members are off to Dublin for the weekend to take in the racing at Naas and Leopardstown. We are staying in Dublin.
Can anyone recommend some of the pubs and eating establishments in the city. Much appreciated. :)

You just have to eat at Roly's Bistro at Ballsbridge - though it's best to book as far in advance as now. They do two sittings, and if you choose the later one there's a fair chance that you'll come across some more forum people. The telephone number for Roly's is +353-1-668 2611/668 0623.

If you like Thai food then a great place with a superb atmosphere is Diep Le Shaker in Pembroke Lane. Again, pre-booking is essential, especially at weekends. telephone +353-1-661 1829.

Where pubs are concerned, there are so many - it depends on what you are loking for.

I assume that you're going over for the Hennessy? There will be a meet-up of forum people from both sides of the sea planned for a drink before (or after) racing at Leopardstown. It seems that only the English based members will be taking in Naas on Saturday.

Thanks Brian, we are going this weekend for The AIG Champion Hurdle.
Someone told me that going out on a Saturday night in Dublin is murder. Everywhere is packed out. Can anyone recommend one of those Dublin pubs with live Irish traditional music?

I never really liked Rolys. The food is excellent. The service is efficient. The mark up on the wine, and prices overall are reasonable, but for some reason that I can't put my finger on, I just don't like it.

A place I do like is The French Paradox, which is just across the road from Rolys. It's more of a wine bar - You don't actually get a three course meal (I think they do one or two main courses a day) It's mostly platters of cold meat, platters of Pate/terrine, platters of cheese, and Foie Gras done a few different ways (you can get a platter of all the different ways). Very well chosen wine, The owners used to import wine into Japan. If you meet up with either of them and ask to recommend a wine, you get a wine lesson thrown in for free.

Everything is overpriced for what you get. It still works out cheaper than Rolys, but you mostly fill up on bread. All the same I have had far more enjoyable evenings there than across the road.

I'll leave the pub selection to others.

I'm heading up on Saturday. I think I'm staying two nights. Is Dublin ready for me?

Brian,

I wouldn't put anyone off going there. They do the best value lunch in Dublin. It just doesn't work for me.

The Arlington, just by O'Connell Bridge may be just the place you're looking for.
I went to the Arlington a couple of times back in November and the atmosphere was great, but the music in there was anything but live - or traditional!

Maybe I just went there on the wrong night!

I found Boxtys in templemead pretty good

italian resturant at bottom of grafton street where airport express stops is pretty good

Other favourite Dublin eateries of mine are the Chinese restaurant Kites at Ballsbridge, Chapter One, under the literary museum, La Stampa in Dawson Street, as much for the surroundings as the food, the Tea Rooms in the Clarence Hotel (owned by Bono and others from U2) and, in the days before you neded to take out a mortgage to pay for your starter, Le Coq Hardi in Pembroke Road.

Le Coq Hardi has gone. Not a big fan of Kites, there are better Chinese restaurants around. Try Chai Yo in Baggot Street. You can have the food cooked at your table, or not, depending on the mood, it's good either way. If you're lucky, the waiters might even bring out a guitar and sing you a few Beatles songs as you've never heard them sung before. I like Chapter One a lot. La Stampa is good as well. I haven't tried the Tea Rooms.

Look forward to meeting many of you over the next few weeks.

All these restaurants are good and you will not be disappointed. Three others that I have being going to recently are Peploes on Stephens Green (tres trendy), and Bang (ditto). Pricy - but happening. One other, from left field is Langkowi at the end of Baggot St. Malaysian food and really very good and not expensive. O Donohues on Merrion Row is good for Trad - for a few ballads - Foleys on Bgt St on Saturday night. There will be plenty of stuff about how your ancestors were rude to our ancestors.

If anybody wants to meet at Leop for a beer on Sunday - just PM me and I'll arrange a meeting place.

GET SOME PRACTICE IN DIM................... :D

CHORUS:Alive, alive-o, alive, alive-o

Singing cockles and mussels

Alive, alive-o.

In Dublin's fair city where girls are so pretty

I first set my eyes on sweet Molly Malone

As she wheeled her wheel barrow, through streets broad and narrow

Singing cockles and mussels alive, alive-o.

She was a fishmonger, but sure twas no wonder

For so were her father and mother before

And they each wheeled the barrow, through streets broad and narrow

Singing cockles and mussels alive, alive-o.

She died of a fever and no one could save her

And that was the end of sweet Molly Malone

Her ghost wheels her barrow, through streets broad and narrow

Singing cockles and mussels alive, alive-o.

:D :D
