Ryanair (spit) is looking like my best option for travel so can I ask seasoned Ryanair travellers for any tips re avoiding crazy surcharges?

It must be over 20 years since I last flew with them and I know they've got a lot worse for that kind of thing and I'm not comfortable relying on my mobile phone for this kind of stuff.

(My daughter is the kind of person who turns up at the airport with a wee bag slung over her shoulder and her phone in her pocket and whizzes through everywhere but she avoids Ryanair as if she can. She's more of an Aer Lingus type.)
