Why is there no wailing, wringing of hands and gnashing of teeth type thread about the earthquake in Pakistan? Are we all dried up of sympathy for victims of disasters?

Sorry, misread your posting - I was talking about the country in general while you were looking for something on here. Well, we do have those who feel it's nature's way of imposing a sort of population control on people who can't stop breeding...

Yes, well, least said about that comment the better.

Speaking for myself, the level of sorrow felt for the people involved is directly proportional to the level of possibility that I or someone known to me could have been involved in the current or a similar incident. Sometimes, explicit reporting can bang home the misery involved, but I can't walk around carrying the world's sorrows on my shoulders.

A child being killed in a car crash in Dublin would have a bigger effect on me than 40,000 nameless people in Pakistan being killed in an earthquake.

I would agree with you there Mel, only I'm a bit of a cold fish so the child in Dublin probably wouldn't have that much effect on me either.

However, the specific (relatively serious) query was more directed to the forum as a whole, which is renowned for long threads involving the words terrible, horrible and tragic at least ten times each whenever there is a disaster of any magnitude.

This, and the lack of response to the thread about the Wallace & Gromit fire, led me to think that perhaps people were becoming inured to the pain and suffering of others.

Another thought which occurred to me, in a half hearted manner, was that perhaps the location had a bearing on the lack of sympathy.

Mainly when horses are involved.

If you want to do something practical, simmo, instead of idly wondering why no-one started the thread sooner, the line to donate to help is 0870 60 60 900.

I called my local mosque to see if they were taking money or clothing donations, and the answer was no to both. So I've donated £100 via the phone. Does that meet with your approval for action, simmo? Just blathering about how awful things are is pretty bleedin' obvious, isn't it?

That's your prerogative, simmo, but why hector the forum about compassion, when you have none yourself? Not that it's of any importance, as millions of people think like you. You must mistakenly think that publicising your lack of compassion makes you interesting.

Who said I was hectoring. I was registering surprise. As for my lack of compassion making me interesting, erm, well, lets just say that I am fully aware of precisely how interesting I am (or am not, as the case may be). I do find your defensive/offensive reaction to be of some interest.
