5220 posts and counting, a lot of them are stories and memories from my racing life or what shaped it.
Just to see who among you were paying attention the following quiz is a reminder of the fun I have had posting/ reading here, whatever about the rest of you .

1 Name the horse (stallion ) whose pre mating sounds nearly became the sound track of " someplace in Amsterdam called "the Blue Lagoon"?"

2 Name the famous racing family three of whose members debut Cheltenham Festival mounts won ?

3 What connects Festival winner Captain Cee Bee with 1957 Welsh Grand National winner Creola ?

4 Who famously said he did not attend a friend's funeral because " they won't be attending mine "?

5 Who said the following " He is a very special jockey. He has ridden horses the calibre of Stroll Home, Monty's Pass, Lord Noelie and Beef Or Salmon in p2ps and failed to win on any of them !"

6 Who was 5. talking about ?

7 Name please
" He is the talk of Talking Horses
He has his own Facebook page
And all the presenters on Attheraces
Of ( ) they sing in praise "

8 This flat racehorse's portrait was hanging in the front room of The Beehive Bar, Montpelier, Cheltenham.
It was removed due to unacceptable drunken behaviour of yours truly one Festival night in 2013, unacceptable because it was a flat racehorse.
On it's removal acceptable drunken behaviour was restored .
Name the horse .

9 " Going great guns on the road between Dingle and Dunquin , while never before feeling such power beneath me, I was in control, King in my own Kingdom.
Then along came a Toyota and nearly drove the two of us: I'll stick to the fields in future !"
Imagined radio ad voiceover by the Scrap Saturday team of a non driving poet and lecturer.
Name him.

10 Name the other non driving racing "personality" the Toyota used in adverts.

11 Name a misspelt Classic winner from the last fifty years.

12 Name the Classic winner whose name was changed due to misspelling.

13 Name the cliff horse , well named that nearly won at 66/1 when posted by edgt.

14 Name the edgt longshot that has Joni Mitchell connections, winning at 40/1 when posted .

15 Three full brothers ran against each other in Australia in the recent pass.
Name them .

Hope you enjoy.
Merry Christmas to one and all.

3) Creola was trained by Fred Rimell
Captain Cee Bee was trained by Edddie Harty

The 1968 Welsh National winner Glenn was trained by Fred Rimell & ridden by Eddie Harty.

3) Creola was trained by Fred Rimell
Captain Cee Bee was trained by Edddie Harty

The 1968 Welsh National winner Glenn was trained by Fred Rimell & ridden by Eddie Harty.

The original Creola was sold by uncle and namesake to Capt C B Harty at Cahirmee Fair July 12 1952.
Resold to Charlie Nixon, Capt Harty's son Buster accompanied the horse to England and rode him to many p2p and hunter chase wins before his win at Chepstow.

In Vet college I had a lecturer Brendan Whitty that told a story to associate with every genus of bacteria.
One student before my time never attended lectures, but attended practical classes .
At his oral examination none of the lecturers recognised him.
Mr Whitty asked about the relevance of each of his stories to the bacterial genus.
Luckily the student got his lecture notes from a classmate who wrote everything down.
The student passed with flying colours.
My dentist at the time was also an elderly gent who only took me on as a patient because I was a vet student; he having vet college connections.
He never injected me when working on fillings etc, but told me a series of yarns of olden vet college times to keep my mind off the job at hand.
Hence my love of a story.
I propose to answer one or two questions per day with the relevant tale, if only to get my eye in for " Mo Chapall Thu " Eddie's Fables Vol 1: horseracing

I don't think Rachel Riley giving me a bj while undergoing dental surgery would take my mind off it.

1. Tepukei
Naming horses thread post #22.
Story of Irish National Stud covering naturally and using recording Tepukei's teasing vocalisations brought a lot of interest from surprising sources, including Amsterdam.
The anecdote provoked a reply from grasshopper which is the reason for this mess !

2. Carberry family.
Dad Tommy won on his first Festival ride Tripacer.
Paul won on Rhythm Section
Nina won on Dabiroun
As it happens four of the first five horse races I remember watching were won by Tommy Carberry; Stayers Hurdle on Brown Lad, Gold Cup on Ten Up, Irish Grand National on Brown Lad and Aintree GN on l'Escargot.
He had no ride in Champion Hurdle that year won by Comedy Of Errors, the first race I watched with any interest.
Carlsberg don't do jockeys, but if they did they would be named Carberry.

3. As stated above Creola was the first foal bought by my uncle in Buttevant.
He cost £25 and he got £3 luck out of that.
Sent home to Paal, near Kanturk the horse was broken and hunted by his brother John and ridden to Buttevant by Ned's youngest brother Collis.
Ned hunted him and won the farmer's race, a confined maiden at Ballyheen p2p near Kanturk, run on what was once part of the Wrixon-Beecher estate for the Duhallow Hunt Cup.
Ned sold the horse at Cahirmee fair that July to Capt C B Harty for £100, the captain reselling to UK farmer Charlie Nixon the time of Dublin Horse Show , doubling his money.
As stated Buster Harty accompanied the horse to England and rode the horse to win 14 Hunter chases and p2ps , including the Lady Dudley Cup before his Chepstow win.
He also was runner up in the United Hunts Chase at Cheltenham Festival, a 4 mile Hunters Chase forfeiting a large lead when running down the water jump.
By King's Approach out of an Avon Cottage mare he was non TB but his sire , who stood at Clongeel Stud (Vaughan's ) was considered by Denis Vaughan to be the best stallion they ever had, including Golden Love, Mister Lord, Germany, Oscar Schindler, Boreen and Carnival Night as stock out of "plain " mares won p2ps , races or flaps left, right and centre.

4 Mick O'Toole when talking about Ger McKenna, famous greyhound trainer.
Mick began life training greyhounds along with being a butcher, taking on horses in the late 1960s.
teaming up with Dessie Hughes was the making of him.
An Capall wrote an extensive obituary to him.
His cloak and dagger existence extended to the fact that his racing stable and office were completely separate entities; once a horse's keep and training fees were charged for for 18 months after the horse in question died!

5 Jimmy Mangan
6 Damian Murphy
The occasion was the p2p awards ceremony 2006 with Damian receiving a "special jockey "award after winning Foxhunter's Chase on Whyso Mayo.
Jimmy as MC had a different meaning for "special " to which DO laughed out loud, if he can be believed...

7 Apache Gold , a horse that had more positive publicity than any flat horse rated 47-65 in living memory.
Well deserved too, all of it !
Glad I was a part of his career.

8 Blue Gown, Derby winner 1868.
Story I heard many years ago from Uncle Ned about the second Lord Roseberry and the gypsy, related here before.
I have not been drunk since that 2013 night, when a £2 tote bet Beneficient without Dynaste paid £70, exceeding sp and tote win payout.
No wonder the good Lord doesn't let me bet on too many winners !

9 Brendan Kennelly of "O'Hara ya hoorya "fame.

10 Danoli was the racing non driver used by Toyota.
Apparently Tom Foley drove a diesel Carina / Avensis which pulled Danoli's horsebox.
I cannot recall Maude Frickert having any Racing connection, but stand corrected...

11. Rodrigo de Triano
Luke put this up a few weeks ago I believe.

12. Saffron Walden.
Used to be Saffron Waldon but they had it changed to correct spelling.
Rumoured that he was going to be gelded to run in Triumph Hurdle in winner of 1999 but Coolmore would never geld a Classic winner now would they ?
Not in the last century/ on this hemisphere anyway.....

13. Never Again
Owned locally by Jeremiah Fitzpatrick she entered my world when winning a 7f 3 yo handicap at Cork Easter Saturday at 28/1.
By Jeremy I watched her with interest on her hurdling debut when her saddle slipped when she was in front and going like a buck. Winner that day Jer's Girl, another Jeremy won a Listed 3yo hurdle at Aintree next start and was quite useful . In fifth was Tudor City (dual Galway Hurdle winner after).
When she next appeared I got 66/1 morning price, she started 25/1 and was second to Rooster Byron, Paul Nolan's first winner in 18 months or so.
After two more placed efforts she won a winners 4 year old hurlde at Limerick 11/03/2016 at 12/1 , outsider of five runners.
Injury prevented her winning again.

14. Paved Paradise.
I saw her first two runs, six days apart at Roscommon and The Curragh when she ran with great promise.
Trainer Eddie Harty gave her a quick run five days later at The Curragh but the handicapper refused to give her a rating.
A tailed off last in a <90 winners race gave her a rating of 51.
To paraphrase Joni Mitchell
" At Clonmel races Eddie Harty to me did say
That his filly I liked was running in Dundalk the next day
Oh, it always seem to go
That you don't have enough on when they've won
But Paved Paradise came in at 40/1 !"

15 As per Maxbet.
Used as we are to brothers Granville Again/ Morley Street; Bikala/Assert; Frankel/Bullet Train running against each other to see three full siblings is a rarity.

Hope you enjoyed my mental exercises this Christmas; I hope to be around for another run next yuletide..
