Eight horsebox stowaways arrested
Eight stowaways were arrested after they were found hiding in a horsebox which had just returned from France.
The suspected illegal immigrants were found on Monday morning shortly after forcing their way out of the horsebox and heading into Wantage, Oxfordshire.
The nine-horse transporter had returned from Paris's Charles de Gaulle airport where it had dropped off a horse which was being flown to the US.
Police said the men had been handed over to immigration officials.
'Forced out'
Michael Hinchliffe who owns the transporter said that when his driver arrived back in Oxfordshire early on Monday morning he discovered that he had eight stowaways inside as he prepared to clean out the horsebox.
Mr Hinchliffe said: "All the doors were locked, the only stops he made were for fuel."
"He went in to the box to clean out and they were huddled in one of the horse stalls where one of the locks was broken.
"We now understand that there were eight people in the vehicle, the driver pulled up to wash out and unfortunately because they had broken the lock to get in he was unable to keep them in the vehicle.
"He tried to shut them in but they forced their way out and appear to have wandered down into the town of Wantage."
A Thames Valley Police spokeswoman said police were called at 0530 BST on Monday to Manor Road in Wantage where they arrested eight men "on suspicion of being illegal immigrants".
