The owner should also have been prosecuted, since it's ILLEGAL to keep these dogs, and as we all know they are kept for fighting, and are lethal weapons - whether against dogs or humans.
There was a programme on the local dog fighting scene made by one of those undercover reporters, which was aired about two weeks ago; it was riveting. The real scandal is, that the police - inc the Liverpool police - knew there were dozens of these dogs being walked around in, and kept on, esp Council estates in various parts of the country, particularly Liverpool; and yet did nothing to confiscate them until this tragedy happened. They are being brought in from Finland and Eastern Europe - very easily, under manifestly wrong vet's certificates calling them boxer or staffie crosses. The reporters got one in with no trouble which they'd bought in Finland; it had fighting scars on it!
After the death of Ellie, there was a huge crackdown and dozens of these dogs were brought in - but why were running around anyway? It's sheer cowardice on the part of the police to ignore these things.
The second scandal is, the dog had attacked before - so why wasn't it put down at the time, esp as it was obviously a banned breed?
Finally, it's very easy to kill a dog if you really need to. I've got a Great Dane off my Ibiza hound [kick to the side of the head, which allowed my guy to run free] and a 'bas rouge' [a kind of French guard dog which looks like a doberman/rottweiler cross] off my collie in the same manner, and again - same dog! - with a pitchfork... If I'd been in the house I would have put a strong kitchen knife between the shoulders or into the ribs. These two dogs were much bigger than Reuben; but I wasn't going top stand by and watch my best friend torn apart. A child???
The other way to kill a dog, and it's useful to know if one jumps for your throat, is to pull its front legs apart with all your strength - which bursts the tendons and sometimes the heart.
This woman didn't even have the guts to kill the thing - in half an hour
