Should a horse that's biggest win was a Group 3 Craven Stakes, and on his penultimate start was beaten 12 lengths in a Listed event really be standing at stud?

For for £1,000 I say he deserves to take his place at stud.

The horse had very good form up untill the 2000 Guineas when he had a serious injury which he never recovered from and you can tell that by his form after being sent back on the racecourse.

Having seen him, I don't think he's the worst looking stallion I've ever seen and with the Stud being owned by JP McManus there may be some intent to get decent National Hunt off spring like a few 2 Mile hurdlers, If you consider the result JP McManus has had with Waaheb whose by Elusive Quality then there could be some very good reason why Elusive Pimpernel is standing at stud.

Good post Bruce

Elusive Pimpernel is in fact owned by Mrs Patino and raced under her Windflower Overseas Holdings guise. He will be visited, in due course, by Snow Fairy also owned by Mrs Patino under her Anamoine Ltd banner and in the meantime by most of her large-ish broodmare band.

The intention by the owner( being Mrs Patino and not jp mcmanus) will not be to produce two mile hurdlers but to give the stallion as good a start as possible on the flat by giving him a pop at all her decent mares.

UG, the original post never said that JP owned the horse, but he owns the stud

You could say the same about Big Bad Bob. Fair dues to Patino. She single handedly made BBB and she will do the same with EP, or it will fail miserably. But without a gamble like this, BBB would not have even been considered as a stallion. There is more to being a stallion than winning group ones.

BBB's success at stud has amazed me-he wasn't the most consistent and he definitely had his limitations.

BBB should have a few runners over jumps this summer and will be interesting to see how they perform. As I'm a jumps follower rather than flat, I'm more interested in how they do over jumps.

Mullionmileanhour has to be one of the worst examples of a horse being retired to stud. Had sore shins and knee problems after a truncated 2-y-o campaign and managed only 3 runs as a 4-y-o.
