For the sake of £150,000 the BBC had a report on the 10 o;;clock news which said the Equire Fertility centre in Newmarket will be closing at the end of the month because they are £150,000 short on funds. All youngstock will be destroyed :(

There is a lot more to this than just the lack of £150,000, the actual amount was to be far more than that over a period of years with Levy Board involvement, and in fact the centre would pass from the TBA to the control of Nottingham University.

But you would still think one of the big money guys in racing would step in and save the unit.

There is also the controversy about Twink Allen's experiments, but the unit did serve a good purpose too in research for strangles and virus abortion.

The staff are now out of jobs too. Shame that the animals who have been involved in research and blood giving cannot be rehomed. Maybe it is because of the government rules which state that laboratory animals have to put down after experiments have ended?

The TBA are just now releasing the news, and there should be a bigger article in the Racing Post.

My feeling entirely - it would be nice if Sheikh Mo stepped in taking time out from the chaos that Godolphin/Darley seem to be in. I drove past the EFU paddocks today and felt awful about all the mares turned out there not having much longer. :(
