Take the ***** all you want, certainly don't watch the acts, but remember that I gave you the winner and a place last year.

For Saturday night back Sweden at 12/1 for the win and 13/5 for the Top 4 and thank me later.

I am splitting stakes 25% and 75% because I am not certain the Scandinavian block-voting will stand up in the face of some of the more aggressive blocks (Iceland with nil points for Sweden last year wtf?, although Norway and Denmark did their job properly with 12pts). The wider Baltic block can play its part though.

I reckon Greece are a threat and definitely worth backing top 4, but I am hoping the relative strength of the Turkish entry will see some of their votes seep away and keep them off top spot.

Never discount the rest of the Balkans either - especially Armenia (drifting now to a price where they might be worth a cover bet) and serial strong performers Serbia.

The Soviet/Eastern Bloc will be dangerous as ever, particularly if they are organised. Russia are outright favourites, but I would take them on with Ukraine in a head-to-head (although not over gas supplies).

Overall though: Go Sverige!!!

Can also say I got the winner in 2007! Not to mention 2006, 2005 and 2004.

Just seen the first semi-final tonight (bah! to delayed coverage honestly!) and want to know what the hell is in the water up there in some of those countries in Europe.

Of the first lot, there were several good performances. The standouts for me tongith were Russia, Armenia, Romania and Israel. Armenia is the one to always watch. They debuted in 2006 with a guy named Andre and got 7th before Hakko got them 8th last year. So they have never missed a final or top 10 spot, and their act this year, like the past 2 years was again strong. Plus like all good "potential" winners Armenia will pick up the block votes from such countries as Georgia, Azerbaijan, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and Turkey.

Romania my other standout. They have never won, but got 3rd in 2005 with Sistem/Luminita Anghel in Ukraine. But does Opera really win Eurovision?

I think Russia and Israel are the ones to beat amongst this group. Dima probably should have won in 2006 (thank you monsters!), but he is back less the mullet :brows: and ballet dancers coming out of pianos blowing roses. All have been replaced with an ice skater.

Israel my favourite at the moment, and my tip to win. Though I really want to see what Turkey and Ukraine pull out of their hats tomorrow night. If they can pull something fancy and half decent they are the other two to not go unnoticed.

Israel or Russia based on 1st semi-final. But something more exciting (which will probably happen) may come out in the second semi-final.

I would agree with Merlin, not a chance I'll be watching the acts - never do. I will be tuning in for the voting as usual though!

Here is the running order for votes, which gives some interesting in-running opportunities.:

UK,
FYR Macedonia,
Ukraine,
Germany,
Estonia,
Bosnia & Herzegovina,
Albania,
Belgium,
San Marino,
Latvia,
Bulgaria,
Serbia,
Israel,
Cyprus,
Moldova,
Iceland,
France,
Romania,
Portugal,
Norway,
Hungary,
Andorra,
Poland,
Slovenia,
Armenia,
Czech Republic,
Spain,
the Netherlands,
Turkey,
Malta,
Ireland,
Switzerland,
Azerbaijan,
Greece,
Finland,
Croatia,
Sweden,
Belarus,
Lithuania,
Russia,
Montenegro,
Georgia
Denmark.

Finland, Lithuania and Denmark means that it looks like Sweden will have to come with a late run. Similarly the Ukraine will be looking for big late votes from Belarus, Lithuania and Russia. I might look to top up stakes before this batch if there are some big prices on offer.

[Stolen from Betmessenger] here are the points that the first eight countries to vote have given Greece in the last 4 years.

UK, 41
FYR Macedonia, 24
Ukraine, 8
Germany, 37
Estonia, 5
Bosnia & Herzegovina, 15
Albania, 39
Belgium,38

With their fancied entry this year, We can expect them to get off to a good start.

I´m with Greece and as someone in work said "I take it you haven´t got your hearing aid in Martin".

How long has it been about singing talent though?

Did you have to put up with Moodoir playing all the sodding songs in the office?!?!?! Can't say I miss that at all!!!!

A power cut with any luck.

Why does any one takes any interest in the Eurovision camp dancing contest is beyond me. What really irks is that the UK pays more for its television rights than any other country, to take part in an electoral ballot with slightly less integrity than those organised Zanu PF

Very little to do with singing, the UK could enter The Beatles and we'd probably still come last.

If the reaction of the womenfolk in the Orchid household is anything to go by, Latvia will go close.

Accordingly, I've backed them at long odds and 10/1 for a top 4 finish.
