This problem does not seem to have a solution after googling for bloody hours...so if one of you tech guys can suss it..big respect

its damaging my health trying to solve it

a few days ago I was burning some cds with my built in CD drive..which isn't working that well...taking me ages...so I get out an external drive our young un bought me some time ago

its an LG GSA E10N

so I plug it in the USB port...no problem on Wednesday night...burning discs like no ones business

at that point it was showing on my "J" drive

the next night I put a disc in to play..it goes though motions of reading disc then stops....I checked and the J drive was no longer showing...basically its disappeared...my computer doesn't show any signs that it has owt connected to it.

I have tried quite a few ways of correcting this...no joy...been round a few tech forums etc

The USB ports are all working by the way..tried a pen drive in them...| also tried a different cable between drive and comp...no difference and I know both cables work as I checked them by connecting my printer.

I know that there were no drivers on the installation CD as the CD has never worked with Vista...which I have now..its just a plug and play situation....I also had Nero 6 on that disc and its not compatiable with Vista..which peed me off no end at the time

its doing the head in guys

I'm not a total novice..but go steady with me.

can you help?

I had a problem with a camera before which sounds similar to this. Basically the camera wouldn't connect to my laptop. What it was ultimately, was that the computer only recognised the camera when the camera was powered on once connected to the laptop. Sounds basic but is your burner in standby mode or turned on, once you connect it to your computer?

good point Granger

The DVD Writer instructions say that all wires should be connected before powering the pc up

when the pc comes on the drive looks dead..no lights etc...this i believe is normal.

i can then load a disc...light flashes when drive opens...still nothing showing re the drive..the disc loads..flashes a few times ..sounds like it is reading the disc..then all goes quiet

the other night...when it worked..everything above was the same but the drive then prompted Windows media player to play the CD..and the drive was showing as J drive...J drive also shows now when I put a pen drive in..it has never shown J drive for the DVD writer since that first night.

At the moment I am suspecting the Burner is at fault...when I go to see my son next week I'll take the burner with me and see if it works on his PC

i'm just hoping it isn't that the burner is fooked

Sometimes this creates a conflict in the registry and the drive disappears. Do a Google search for "lowerfilters" and "CD drive disappears"; and there's a way you can go into the registry and fix this problem, if you're comfortable doing so.

Otherwise try doing a system restore ?

thanks DG

i've done both of those over the last couple of days without sorting it

both are good advice

the results are pointing towards a dud DVD drive by the looks of it

Sounds like the type of gremlin that may ne fixed with the latest bios revision and /or service pack...worth a try.

you may be right Sheikh

before i do owt else I'm taking it to my lads house on Wednesday to see if it works on his

tbh honest I'm not sure which would be worse...it working on his ok ..or not
