Without so much as consulting my agent first, two friends of mine have sent me e-mails in the past couple of days informing me that they've signed me onto something called 'Facebook' - which allows you to stay in touch with your friends, blah, blah. Hallo? Did I ask to be signed up onto something? No, I didn't. I usually either see my pals, talk to them by telephonic device, send e-mails or, if they're Neanderthal, letters. (Texting is anathema to me, even the bloody word 'texting'!) As a devout technophobe, the last thing I want is to be made to communicate through something I don't understand.

Que? Don't encourage them, whatever it is! There's another who says 'we can talk at any time' on something called Skype, which is supposedly free to use. But he's a cheapskate, so it probably does appeal to him! I'm wary of loading up my computer with a load of stuff I don't want and won't use, though I know some folks love to bung everything on.

Skype is perfectly kosher and free - as long as both parties are at their PC, of course. Our sales people do most of their active telphone contact with clients using Skype and it is great for that.

Facebook is such a crap name isn't it? Enuff to put you off, but plenty of people use it. Myspace and Facebook work for people who do not have their own websites, you can share photos, bulletins and meet new people.

Also, if you do not want to log on you can curl up with a good book and a cup of tea and ignore everybody. Unlike the phone ringing which is just too tempting, and irritating, to ignore.

Oh go on Kri, get a page so we can all read about you!

  Then I'd need all sorts of stuff like a digital camera, and a scanner, a colour printer... :( I haven't even waded through all my 'how to' books on just using the computer yet! But thanks for the explanations of what things are, folks - very useful. I'm obviously not as computerate as my two pals, who're the same age as me. I must try to get out of this Jurassic phase soon!

If someone has invited you to be thier 'friend' on Facebook you have the option of accepting or declining. If you don't accept these initial invitations then you won't have a profile on there so don't worry if it's not your thing :)

I use it a lot myself but I took a gap year and I find it a fairly easy way of keeping
up with all the people I met on my travels.

Facebook can be helpful in finding old friends from years ago that you lose contact with.

Theres always a good reason why you "lose contact"

Face book is for billynomates who like to pretend they know more than 3 people (including their mum)
