I blogged somewhere " Cover Of The Racing Post " lyrics of a song in the Dr Hook style.
While the Racing Post cover still eludes me Martin Stephens name checked me today in his " Good Morning Bloodstock "article/email for my reply to his article regarding Urban Sea's presence in 45% of the lots catalogued at the recent Deauville sale.
" I was at Royal Ascot in 1993 the day Urban Sea finished second in the Price Of Wales Stakes on heavy ground.
It had rained so heavily that the underground passage at the train station was flooded so we had to walk through an adjacently parked train to alight onto the platform.
I remember thinking that if I had a lottery jackpot burning a hole in my pocket what wonderful Bumper horses I could breed from her.
At Longchamp that October I realised that as a racehorse breeder I would have been an underachiever of epic proportions.
Some of us are just not meant to have that kind of money, and with good reason too!"
Amazing the things that can cheer a fellow .

I had the good fortune to meet Urban Sea when she ran in California when I was working out there. Her trainers son was walking around the stable area with her and she was a funny thing with huge ears so you couldn’t help but notice her. He came to dinner with us a few days later but was tragically killed in a car accident before her greatest triumph at Longchamp. Due to my connection, I did back her that day and screamed her home at 80-1 much to the annoyance of the others in the yard who had gathered around the TV to watch.....and I seem to remember telling them all that she’d win due to the hock deep ground, but of course they ignored me!

I never imagined the massive influence she would have as a broodmare though but do feel very blessed to have been in the presence (and stroked :<3:) such a legend.
