I've not really made a contribution to this subset of the forum and would like to welcome myself with a broad conversation on what places we like to go when enjoying socializing with family and friends over a lovely meal?

My personal enjoyment comes at the hands of the Handburger Co. in Birmingham City Centre, where you can sit by the canal watching the world go by through giant windows in anticipation of a burger that tests the dimensional limitations of the human mouth with gigantic continental spiced aroma and succulent chicken breast which you can feel the strings of chicken ping and break as you separate this obese meal for consumption.

I would gladly offer my condolences to The Harvester & Frankie And Bennies who have seen a reduction in appearance since the foundings of such a Company.

If you ever pass through Hitchin possibly on the way home from Newmarket, I would recommend The Anchor pub for a meal. It's actually in Walsworth just to the East of Hitchin on the A505 near the traffic lights. Good old fashioned pub grub, nothing too fancy but wholesome and plenty of it!

If its burgers you like (and im not a big red meat eater), then GBK is a consistent chain. For real american Burgers done exactly as in the us (and superb beef) the Byron chain is excellent. Not sure they can be found outside of London though

I find its masses of Jap and noodle eateries in town now. All good stuff. love jap food. Eat Tokyo is a fav of mine

When I stayed in Scotland the Rotunda in Glasgow was a fav haunt, excellent place to "Take the burd" as we used to say, but they were far fom shy with their prices

if we went racing in Yorkshire we'd try and make a point of going to the Buck Inn Pub & Restaurant - Maunby which is my favourite.

Great atmosphere, extremely friendly and the food is simply awesome.

Other than that I loved Chinese takeaway Chicken Curries which are no more Chinese than flying in the air but still for me the best fast food on the planet.

I've only been to the one in Leeds and it was distinctly average compared with some of the local independent eateries.

From what I can recall:

- Overpriced rubbish beer
- A burger that was lacking in taste, and a bit fatty.
- Poor bread to burger ratio (bread too small)
- Sterile atmosphere/uncomfortable

If you can abide the atrocious "serve our mates first and only then when we can be bothered" service, this is about the best burger bar I know of: http://anationofshopkeepers.com/

Although I bet a Gaucho Burger would be worth a shot.

I used to know the owners of that place, but I think it might have changed hands a few times. Used to have a good rep when I lived up there.

Just to be awkward I am going to say that Chinese is my least favourite cuisine and chinese curries are bloody horrible. Eash to our own :)

But on that subject, big thing in London now is street food. Tatchbrook market, lower marsh etc. Its booming. I had a Senegalese curry couple of weeks back and it was quite superb..

If we're playing Michelin starred - I adore Heston's Fat Duck and in Ireland Chapter One & Gilbaud's are wonderful. El Buli is a once in a lifetime experience (with the wait list to match)

You were lucky to have gone there, Miesque, and you'll not get the chance again.

Worst service ever?

When I was a kid me and my friend Alex worked in the Loster Pot in Blackpool at around the same time Brian London had the 007 nightclub. These places were the haunts of a lot of celebrities of the time. This was the original restaurant which moved location many years ago.

Alex and I went back as cutomers a few times several years later and the food was fantastic as was the service.

Certainly better than when Alex and I were waitering. One evening Alex was serving Engelbert Humperdink. He had 2 blonde bimbo's dining with him..Alex was carrying this huge Strawberry Gateau to their table when he tripped and the entire cake ended up down the cleavage of one of Engy's companions. Alex a great wit promptly asked her..Do you have enough?

Bent over double with laughter we both got sacked on the spot.

The main problem with almost all eastern restaurants is most are nothing like the real thing. I went to a Thai restaurant in Newcastle and assure you it's nothing like the Thai food you get in Thailand...love to see the face on someone who has never had it eating authentic Som Tam from Issan for the first time they'd need 2 gallons of lager on stanbye LOL

Chinese restaurants owned by Chinese Thai dont even have curries on their menu. Ive asked several and they say it's not really Chinese it originates from Singapore/Maylasia so I cant get it for love or money.

I guess the first people who opened Chinese takeaways UK may have came from Singapore and others just followed suit because it sold so well.

I would think most of them came from Hong Kong, surely? There were, and probably still are a lot of Chines restaurants called The Hong Kong.

Bo Innovation in Hong Kong was the best meal I've ever had - 13 course tasting menu, eye-watering bill but worth every penny. If you're ever in HK don't hesitate to go there!
